Some good restaurants and local shops. In danger of being taken over by chains, with rents rising in the area. Don't miss Vaguely Reminiscent gift shop and The Regulator book store. Whole Foods is nearby, too.

Every Friday night, people just flock there using up all parking lots. It's common driving around for half an hour just to find a parking spot.

Ninth street has such an eclectic mix of restaurants, stores, and activities. I love starting at one end and visiting the storefronts, bookstores, coffee shops, and restaurants. It can keep me entertained for hours. It's a "must-see" Durham activity.

Seedy and faded. Very few decent places left, and it is sketchy on its best day. You can try to call it a locale with quaint atmosphere - it is dirty and dated.

All the quaint small, locally-based shops gave the area a unique feel. I would definitely take anyone visiting from out of town here for Sunday brunch.

Make sure you get a slice of pizza to enjoy. The city has made nice improvements to the area. There are many places to visit and eateries.

Ninth Street is an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and now the encroachment of newer buildings and apartments. A fascinating, fabulous find of wonderful food and great people!

From Elmo's Diner to Vaguely Reminiscent, this mini-college town is a delight. Banh's Vietnamese place should not be missed, And for someone who is not a hamburger affecianado, the burgers at Dain's Place are out of this world!

Ninth Street was advertised as having great nightlife. We did find a great place to eat there, but didn't find anything else going on when we were there.

Interesting urban experience in downtown Durham. Perhaps don't go after sunset, otherwise historic, as these things go in the U.S.

Ninth Street has some oldies but goodies among its businesses, but it also has some new places as well. I'm tempted to give it 4 stars to attract more people to it, but I'll stick with three for now. It has a nice variety of restaurants for such a short stretch, something for everyone. Some of the buildings are looking run down and rickety, though, and there's so much promise for this stretch, which is near Duke's East Campus. It has the potential to become even more vibrant.

Ninth Street is an area, really just a few blocks long, known for lots of restaurants and small shops that cater not only to the college crowd (Duke University being so nearby) but that are also family friendly (think Elmo's Diner for great breakfasts and kid's menus) or date friendly (see Vin Rouge for delicious french offerings). Recent expansions include a Harris Teeter and large parking lot and construction is underway which will bring many apartments and a hotel to the area. Expect heavier foot and car traffic soon.

In terms of cool streets/shops/restaurant areas I have visited I would say this is middle to bottom rung. It's really just a place to go just to get out of the house or to grab a quick bite. Nothing too special. If your out and about in Durham go for food and if you are into random shops you will probably like those. Bars were not anything to brag about. Drinks/food was cheap though The crowd here is mixed with bikers, families, college kids, locals, and tourists all eating and hanging out in the same place, so that was interesting. If you are into small town/college town streets you will probably like this.

We always eat at Elmo's Diner but there are many new places to sample. Bruegger's Bagels is great for take out and has quick service. Several interesting shops to browse through and not all geared to the college students.
