The museum is the old Holt house. first built in 1790. Its located on NC 61 just south of Burlington, NC. They are open every day except Monday - but they do rent it out for private parties, so, particularly on weekends, check with them before arriving. They offer guided tours, so look into that. The old house is a gracious and beautiful lady... and its yard flows with gentle hills - just a gorgeous setting... and relaxing - which makes a visit a step-back-into-history experience. There's no big "buzzers-and-bells", no crowds, and no "must see" angle... but the museum is a nice outing. Enjoy.

We've been there before but could only walk around and look in the windows because they were closed. The grounds/gardens are beautiful so we even enjoyed just walking around. Finally caught them when they were open. The lady that gives you the tour was fantastic. She could answer any question we had and we stayed longer than we needed to just talking to her. The artifacts room has more history in it than some much larger museums. Check their hours of operation and if you are in the area it's a must stop. There is no charge but they do have boxes out for donations. The home (Oak Grove Plantation) was built in 1790 and was a grain plantation (1700 acres). The original granary, barn, corn crib, carriage house, and summer kitchen are still on the property. The family cemetery is to the side of the kitchen.
