I have seen the brochures, and really had no idea what it would really be like. There was some construction, but we were routed around to the back. The gift shop offered a discount on purchases for the inconvenience. The tour is worth the money and the place is terrific once you are inside. They were working on the building and the dig site both, so it was noisy. We payed for the guided tour, it didn't take long (less than 30 minutes). On the tour we had our questions answered and were led through the dig sites. Interesting stop in the area, glad we took the time to view the sink hole where many mammoth and other animals have been discovered.

Incredible dig site. You actually tour the site and see the workers doing their thing trying to recover mammoths that are embedded in the earth many feet under ground level. Truly an amazing site to visit.

We stopped by the Mammoth Site while laying over on a long road trip. Much more interesting than I thought it would be, The guide was very knowledgable. Definitely recommend this site.

We went with our 7 year old grandson. We all really enjoyed it and learned a lot. The story of the discovery itself is interesting and the story of the pit itself was amazing. They have a great interactivity for the kids, don't let them miss it. Grandson absorbed and remembered a lot of it and told his class the whole story.

I decided to stop by the Mammoth site for a break in drivin home. I am not that interested in archeology but i found this very fascinating. I did not take the tour, i just bought a ticket and they gave me a booklet that describes everything. The site is in one building where you can see the excavation of the bones, fossils.. The tour they offer is very short as i walked into the site and their tour was just starting and by the time i got half way around the site the tour was over. after their tour they were able to wander free throughout the site. The site is not that big and it is inside a building. You buy your entrance ticket in the big gift shop and when you are purchasing your ticket they have little monitors where you can see the site itself with a live feed. after you check out the site you go through a double door that leads to a small museum. I probably spent an hour tops and that is with shopping in the gift store.

It's truly mammoth in every aspect. To be in this part of our nation and not visit the Hot Springs Mammoth Site is to miss a significant element of ones visual and historical education.

I'm not even that into archeology but this place was excellent. It was really cool seeing all the mammoths that fell into this hole. There's a fee for the tour, it was an hour long and there's a great store, which there's no fee to look around in.

This is an active Archaeological dig site. It is a bit of drive south of Wind Cave National Park but it is highly worth the effort. In prehistoric times this site was a water/mud hole with steep slick sides. So animals would come to drink and then fall in and drown. So there are layers and layers (20-30 ft thick) of full skeletons of prehistoric animals. There are so many bones that the scientists only spend 1-2 months digging up bones and the rest of the year cleaning and preserving them. This process is so lengthy and scientifically valuable that they built a huge facility to cover the site, allowing scientists to work indoors. It is a fascinating operation. They give tours where they walk you around the dig site and point out various skeletons and features. You learn a lot about Mammoths! And you see the bones in place exactly as they were found. We enjoyed our visit immensely.

Educational. They've done a nice job preserving the site but making it accessible to tourists. You can view the site from several angles. You have to walk along a sturdy boardwalk with some stairs. If you cannot handle stairs, you still have a good view from the entrance into the site.We were able to watch some people actively working on the site. Very interesting and tedious work.

Wow this place was so cool . Great staff, very educational. The active dig is right there as you walk around the boardwalk in the confines of the building. We went without kids but will be back with kids who I'm sure will love as much as we adults did. Worth making it part of a road trip to the Black hills or on the way to yellowstone. Amazing to see the bones and so many of them right there. Make the trip!

A visit to this dig was included during a Titan tour of USA PARKS AND CANYONS and was a fascinating look back into the past. These Mammoths must have been wonderful animals to see wandering around.Review by Maggie and Graham.

Awesome place for all ages, friendly staff. If you are interested in fossils and history of area this is the place to see. If see in summer can view the dig at work. Well worth the admission fee can also become a member of site and help this nonprofit organization plus receive discount for joining. Hot Springs is a great community need to plan extra time to stay in area and enjoy the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota!

We have visited the Mammoth Site several times. It never ceases to amaze me. If you visit during the right time you can see people at work in the site. Everyone who has travelled with us has enjoyed this stop, kids and adults.
