Visited today, wonderful shop and museum inside. Since there was no one else there, I was escorted around the facility by Allen personally. He also showed me an adult buffalo skull and let me hold it! Unfortunately the buffalo weren't close today. After talking to Allen, he said he's the only one there, and it's best to call ahead for someone to be here. His manager comes around every other day. I asked him if they have tours to see the buffalo in the field up close, and he said yes, but you should call ahead to check when the dates are! Great visit. No fee for visit, they just ask you sign your location/where you're from (saw people from Switzerland came by a few days before me), but they accept donations!

We visited the interpretive center on July 5, 2014. Kind of bummed to find it closed. There were no hours posted and no signs saying it was permanently closed but it appeared that was the case.

We visited on August 8, 2013 and found the center closed and locked. No hours were listed. We called the phone number on the sign and a recording stated that visits can be scheduled and for us to leave a number and they would call back. A person from Pierre Chamber of Commerce at the Visitor's Information Center stated that the center is closed and no one has heard from their staff. The center is about eight miles south of Pierre, I'd call first, before making the drive, but, don't expect an answer.

My family thoroughly enjoyed our stop at the Buffalo Interpretive Center! We got a great close-up view of the large bison herd. My kids were fascinated by the noises they made and loved watching them bathe in the dirt! The exhibits were excellent and we were treated to a very hands-on experience with all of the tools and toys made from the bison. (Thanks again, Blaine!) We saw many of these articles during our trip, but here we were allowed to touch them!!On leaving the Center, we decided to take the Native American Scenic Byway back to 90 and were so glad we did! The scenery was beautiful!!!We would definitely recommend this as a great stop!!!

Located just 7 miles out of Fort Pierre on Highway 1806. Our GPS gave us wrong directions, so just follow the above. This is a small center with a large herd of bison. While we were there, most of the herd came pretty close to where we were viewing them, so we got a really good look at them. The center itself is very well done and was constructed by the Lower Brule (Sioux ) High School. We learned things here that were not included in the larger cultural heritage centers. This is WELL worth a visit. Nice gift shop with many hand made items. There is no charge, but donations are gratefully accepted.
