The elevator is fun but doesn't have much practical use, as far as I can tell. It is a great piece of Oregon history. It would be better if it wasn't a favorite place of homeless folks.

Why take an elevator when there's a beautiful staircase next door that winds it's way down? The best part is not the staircase, it's the staggered, vertical plume adjacent to it that sends a small creek on it's way to the river. It's a much more worthwhile experience. To take the 'creek' stairs, continue walking downstream just a short ways from the elevator. You'll see, on the left, or river side, the walkway. This is much, much better than taking an elevator. I should mention too that I wouldn't use the elevator if alone. To access, you had to walk behind several closed buildings and I would have felt very uncomfortable if by myself.

This is a must see in Oregon City! It is (in my opinion) the city's coolest landmark. If you can find the elevator (not hard), you can pretty much find your way around Oregon City.

Elevator takes you to the upper level of the city, to history sites, and the McLoughlin house. Grandchildren enjoyed it. We parked by McLoughlin house, took the elevator down to Christmas at the Zoo, and lunch.

Was running late, getting back to the parking meter. Then I remembered I could use the elevator to descend to the downtown level. I got back in time to avoid a ticket. Yeah! I love that it has a person inside handing the ride as I had been reluctant to ride in there alone.

This so-called "vertical street" is really just an elevator, but it's worth a visit just to see the historic photos of downtown in the areas around the upper entrance. And hey, it's free! The immediate area around the lower entrance is a bit gritty, and when we exited, we saw a couple of "local characters," one of whom was pushing a shopping cart and had a pit bull on a rope, but they left us alone.I have lived near Oregon City for over a decade now, and have been cheering the sometimes-glacial revitalization of downtown. With the relatively recent closure and bankruptcy sale of the former Blue Heron paper mill site on top of Willamette Falls, I hope that this beautiful natural area will be restored to some semblance of its pre-industrial glory, including the lampreys.

Funny to review an elevator, but this one has to be visited! Oregon City is a city of interesting history and many "firsts" so for that alone you should visit! BUT....this elevator is the only municipal elevator in the United States! How's that for interesting and random!? The main part of the city had started on the lower level near the water. As the city grew, many of the more prestigious families as well as a majority of the population started building homes on the upper level. There is so much to see in Oregon City, and the municipal elevator is a fun little addition.

We love the experience of traveling in the Oregon City elevator and so does our dog! The elevator operator is always so pleasant and has kind words for our corgi. It affords lovely views from the top and the remodel features neat hologram photos and a really cool night-lit photo projection on the elevator column. Oregon City is blossoming these days with new businesses and restaurants, the Arch Bridge is a piece of history in itself, and the elevator takes you up to a neighborhood of historic homes, many identified with little plaques marking the original owners, the architectural style and the year they were built. The elevator is at the heart of this lovely area. Whether you live in the Portland area already or are just visiting, don't miss Oregon City and its charming municipal elevator. You can ride up and down in mere minutes, but take a few hours to explore the adjacent areas! You'll be glad you did.

Oregon City exists on two levels. The commercial area along the river and, up the very steep hillside, the residential area. Historically stairs "linked" the two. The elevator is an intriguing oddity. Worth checking out if you're in Oregon City but not worth a trip in itself.

Our town is on hills. The city elevator is what we take from the top to the bottom of our town. It's neat, because it's different.

Recommend you to take a tour to the top for the nice view. It is a free ride on limited hour daily. Bring your friends and family with you.

The elevator took you from ground level up maybe 10 stories so that you had a panoramic view of the mountains, the Willamette Falls, and the now defunct paper mill. It also had a wonderful walking path after you got out of the elevator so that you could take a short, easy walk to get a better view of the Falls. It was a beautiful day and the gardens along the path were lovely, so it was a nice attraction, but for us, it was just nice!

We first took the free summertime Oregon City trolley to the McLoughlin House stop. There we took the big set of steps down to the bottom of the elevator, took the elevator up, then took the stairs again just because it was such an enjoyable walk, with beautiful flowers and waterfalls. Then a block away at the bottom of the elevator/steps is Main St, where there are a number of very good restaurants (our favorites were the Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants). By the way, Wrightberry's Bakery on Main St. has the most best oatmeal raisin cookies I have ever tasted.

Bit like the Seattle Space Needle, so futuristic when built that it very dated now. Loved the old pictures, and the 3D effects. Lift operator was really friendly, told us about its history, and answered our questions.Just dont get things like this in Scotland. If you have 15 mins to kill in Oregon City its a must
