I just learned this place existed recently. We visited Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and therefore stopped at the Holy City. If you are a fan of work done in the 1930s by the WPA, it is definitely interesting to see that this too was completed by them. Basically it is a little chapel with several replicas of Christian holy sites made of red rock. The empty tomb and Golgotha were my favorites. Definitely worth a stop. And, you get to see some AMAZING prairie dog towns as you drive into the place too!

Phenomenal attraction! Easily spend an hour just walking around and enjoying the city. If they added some sort of dining, I believe this would be a much higher visited attraction.

We have been going there for 50 years ,more now because we have grand kids. We love to remember the old times of the pageant and the kidos just like being on stage!

Nestled in the Wichita Mountains is a Stone Built Passion Play Site called the Holy City. Here hundreds of watchers sit on a hill on a cold April night to watch the story of Christ unfold and build to a crescendo of his resurrection according to Christian beliefs.

It was snowing the day we visited the wildlife refuge and the Holy City was closed. We plan to return in the spring of 2015 to walk through this area. If you get to this area be sure to drive though the Wildlife Refuge, we saw a lot of wildlife and had a great time getting up close & personal to the buffalo. Topped the hill and two were standing in the middle of the road, since they were larger than our vehicle, we waited patiently until they decided to move.

Have been before, but got enticed back for a wedding which went fairly well with a small group of about 60. Looks like about 150 would be comfortable there. Bit of a drive, but sometimes the buffalo are out, and no doubt the prairie dogs will be active as that clan in the reserve has really taken over the place. The attraction is meant to highlight the crucifixion and the decorations and buildings are somewhat interesting. If you are in the reserve, worth the few miles extra drive over to it.

My wife and I, as well as a couple of our granddaughters, visited the Holy City while crisscrossing the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. The various buildings are unusual in that they are used to present the Passion Play. All of the structures are built with rocks from the surrounding area. The place is pretty cool whether you are religious, or not. There is no admission and there are restrooms. Ask for a “Discovery Trail” card that you can get stamped at any of 8 Lawton area attractions and receive a free gift. Unfortunately, we didn’t get our card stamped here, so we do not know what souvenir that is given.

I LOVED this hidden gem. Would love to visit during the annual Passion Play pageant as it must be very moving, I appreciate the love and sweat that went into building this amazing setting. Especially touched by the beautiful statue of Christ on the hill.

We enjoyed walking through it. Will love coming back for pagent. A lone buffalo was blocking the ladies room. Was desperately walking around him. He just stared at me like he was bored.

While getting ready to leave the plains (which we didn't see much of except prairie dogs) we decided to check out The Holy City. All I can say is I'm sure the locals really enjoy the services held there since the site is beautiful. Wet took some nice photos & visited the gift shop. It was worth the trip.
