Montague is one of the oldest courses in Vermont. It is open to the public and also has membership levels.It has had it's ups and downs over the years. Hurricane Irene DESTROYED a number of holes in 2011 but these have been replaced and are better than before. THis season got off to a rough start, as did a lot of New England courses, with many bad greens but they have recovered.The course itself is a fair test of golf. For long hitters, it will be a driver and wedge on about all of the par fours. For average golfers (under 100) it is a fun course with enough challenges to punish you for a bad shot but fair enough that you don't get pun ished on good shots.

Montague Golf Club is a kind of secret place its players would like to keep that way. Located off Interstate 89 in central Vermont, it presents a wonderful golf experience at a low price. Early bird specials on weekdays are $25+ for golf and riding cart. The course is in excellent shape and well-maintained by a friendly and hardworking group of locals who will help you find your ball, and are very carefully quiet when needed. The course runs on two levels, with holes "up top" being the usual rolling fairways with greens that are challenging because of their size or undulations. The second "lower" nine are much akin to a links course, meandering along with the river, and fairways surrounded by tall wheat like grass and thistle plants. There is rough, which is long enough to make hunting for wayward balls a chore. But the fairways are fairly wide, there are tees that run from about 4800 from the forward tees to 6130 at the tips, with two other choices on each hole, members tees and senior tees. The two of us play early morning (7:30) and finish in about 2.5 hours...........3 hours is normal. So if you're in the area and want to enjoy a round, check in with Montague. The same owners own and run the Three Stallion Inn across the road from the back nine. I think you'll like the course.
