Took the tram to see this beautiful place. Kristy, our naturalist had such a passion for pointing out various wildlife and explaining the importance of the mangrove forest and how it affects nature and living things. She sucked me in to want to know more. Very interesting! Went to the education center afterwards and was lucky to sit in in a monarch butterfly discussion with live butterflies to view afterwards. The only issue I saw worth mentioning is it can be a challenge for handicapped people to get on the tram. There are 3 steep steps to climb onto the tram and I had taken my elderly mom. She needed assistance as well as a couple of individuals with canes. There was one place when we got off to view some things and my mom decided it was best to stay on the tram rather then take those steps a second time.

My husband and I did the tram tour of the refuge and really enjoyed it. Our guide, Barry, was very knowledgeable and also a wonderful narrator for the tour. We got to see several varieties of water birds, learned an awful lot about mangrove trees, and the scenery is lovely. I would not recommend just driving in with your car; you should definitely purchase tickets for the tram so you actually know what you're looking at. I'm not sure if children--particularly teens--would appreciate it. If you are a fairly serious nature lover, you will enjoy this tour. See if you can get Barry as your guide!!!

We will come back here again one day. We did the driving tour through and saw lots of birds....A must see when in the area.

Ride a bike, rentals all over the Island, rent a kayak, or just walk the trails. Well managed natural refuge.

Great spot for fishing with young kids. We didn't explore any of the refuge other than to wet a line.

If you like to bike, hike, and look at wildlife, this is a perfect outing. It is on Sanibel Island, but there are few sandy beaches in this park. Instead you will see all kinds of birds and many Mangrove forests. Check out the education center for more information. Well worth your time if you get tired of the sandy beaches.

Great place to cycle (or drive) through stopping off wherever you see something interesting - best $1 each we ever spent! Go through on your way to Captiva.

We had a fantastic time at Ding Darling's. The birds are awe-inspiring and the gators are amazing. It is a photographer's dream and a hiker's playground. We've been back twice & will keep returning. Great for families and people with any mobility issues.

We visited here twice on a recent trip to the area. The refuge is well known to people interested in seeing birds. There is a paved four-mile drive with observation platforms and a 2-mile walking path. Both have excellent views of Florida birds and other wildlife.Be sure to read the website carefully for hours of operation. Many visitors did not get the word that the drive (but not the trail) is closed every Friday. Likewise, the logistics for special programming was frustrating. Also, try to avoid the causeway to the island at peak times.

We like birding and love visiting Ding Darling at low tide. We took my sister and brother-in-law and they loved the experience of seeing so many birds in one place. We drove our car around and were able to stop where we wanted to observe with scope and binoculars. We even saw a hermit crab in the water. We had our national park pass so could go right in. We came back another day and spent a lot of time in the education center and gift shop. Great place for nature lovers.
