One of my favorite places to take grandchildren. There are live local animals in outdoor cages, great exhibits indoors, a hands on area for children that is always a hit and trails to walk plus if you hit it right in March they tap the trees for maple syrup and boil it down right there. Educational but fun.

Very knowledgeable curators, interesting exhibits. We were there in the fall when the gardens were at there end but it was fun to watch the birds. The horned owl, bald eagle and red fox on exhibit have been rescued and are used to educated visitors.

I am embarrassed to say this that we had lived in the area of 30 years Saturday was our first visit to the River trail Nature Center. Short review we will be back often now. The local naturalist, Ryan was very informative and pointed out many interesting points of interest. You can see up a close and personal a bald eagle, a couple different owls, a coyote, a red fox, turtles, fish and snakes. Not to mention the native plants small birds and squirrels. This is a perfect morning or afternoon for a family of any age.

It is a wonderful experience for young children. The Maple Syrup harvest is fun and informative. It is a hidden treasure.

This site is part of the Cook County Forest Preserves system. It showcases an area where Native Americans hunted bear, deer and elk along the banks of the Des Plaines River, and trappers and fur traders hunted beaver in its waters. Today you can see a fox, red-tailed hawk, great horned and barrel hawks, coyote and a bald eagle in the outdoor cages -- and bees in their hives. There are many more family-friendly exhibits in the building (closed on Friday). There are loads of well-marked trails that you may find yourself sharing with deer. November -February open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. dailyMarch - October open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. dailyDuring mosquito season, don't forget bug spray.
