Had not been through Milledgeville before and were short on time, so decided to visit this museum. Very well done with interesting exhibits. Highly recommend it to anyone interested in Georgia history. Not big, but worthwhile

Georgia's Old Capital Museum is an effort to provide an overview of Georgia's cultural history from prehistory to the period following the Civil War, with some emphasis on Milledgeville, the capital from 1804 to 1868. My favorite portion was the section on prehistoric peoples in Georgia and their artifacts. They've provided a good balance of periods and artifacts, so that one doesn't feel overwhelmed by any one era, say, the Civil War period. It's one of the better museums we've toured in Georgia. There's a fair amount of descriptive material to read, so plan to spend some time in the museum. Because we took the Trolley tour earlier that day and spent a lot of time in the legislative chambers of the Old Capital building then, we did not tour the legislative chambers again, although that option was available. If you visit Milledgeville, and I highly recommend that you do so, I suggest that you visit this museum.

My husband and I toured the Old State Capitol Building in October while visiting friends in Milledgeville. We were privileged to get a personal tour since our friend works at the Georgia Military College. Our friend is also a history buff, so we not only got a personal tour, but a great perspective on its role as part of Georgia's history. If you're visiting or passing through Milledgeville, definitely put it on your list of things to do.

The museum is located on the same square block with the a Military Academy. The building is a reproduction of the old Capitol building which was destroyed by a fire in the 1940's. So you see a reproduction of the room where the secession debate and vote took place. The museum had a lot of information going back to prehistoric times and several artifacts. My favorite was a fossilized camel's tooth. The Civil War displays are told from a Confederate viewpoint, but it is not offensively so. There is an attempt to tell sone history of slavery in Georgia, but minimally. There is a display and information on the insane asylum that is also interesting. The cost is minimal. It was $5 for those of us age 55 or older. Friendly staff. Really appreciated the many places to sit down throughout the exhibits. We found free on street parking nearby. We were not sure we had the right place at first as the building does not look a Capitol.

Building, grounds, etc. all very impressive. We went here as a stop on the Trolley Tour and our guide, Joe, was a real history buff and really brought things to life. Highlight is a visit to the Legislative Chambers on the upper floor where the vote to secede from the Union was cast in 1861. Milledgeville was the capital of Georgia from 1803 until after the Civil War when it moved to Atlanta in 1867. If this period is of interest to you make sure to visit.
