My friend and I am on a mission to visit every Hitchin pub, as we are local, and have been is a surprisingly few. This is a gem of a pub, reasonably priced, extremely friendly staff and the ale is good. We went on a chilly Thursday evening, bucketing it down, and I felt so cosy sitting outside with the heaters on.

As a late 20 something who has only really drunk lager for the past decade, I thought I would have a go at trying real ale. So I wandered into The Half Moon on a quiet Friday afternoon to be greeted by friendly bar staff, who aware of my ale ignorance, offered me samples of the many different ales and their personal recommendations. Before long a few of the regulars also chipped in with their own tips. After finally making my decision (I've forgotten the ale's name - sorry!), I found myself a corner, got lost in a book, drank my great beer and ultimately spent one of the most relaxing afternoons I've had in a long time.I've been back a few times since and each time I fall a little bit more in love with it. It's a peaceful pub with great beer and frequented by nice people. You can't ask for much more than that.

Had a wonderful New Year's eve party evening . Excellent value for loads of lovely food and the added bonus of a great range of real ale to choose from. Always busy - a local pub for lots of regulars.

Fantastic pub - great beer, great staff, great locals, good value tasty food, real fire, pub dog & cat. No need to go anywhere else in Hitchin!

In a town with some really excellent real ale houses, this one is the best. Always six guest ales and four or five guest ciders in excellent condition with knowledgeable and freindly staff. Combine this with a reasonably priced selection of home made grub plus a log fire and you have the quintissential British pub expirience.

I am writing an excellent review for this pub, but I do not want it to become more popular! It has a great selection of real ales, competent , long serving staff, and a very friendly atmosphere, always a great mixed clientele , all steered by Craig , Wendy & Howard . Don't change a thing!

Well I'm glad that my good friend Jim has introduced me to this shining example of what a traditionally good English pub should be like. Real beer rules the roost here so don't even think of it lager boy! I had a cracking pint of a brew called "the elephants trunk". A suitably nutty name for a very nutty ale drunk by a very nutty training officer of the local diving club (me!).It was full on Saturday this is tantamount to how well the ale is kept. The only down side being that it's so popular I suggest he expands the place if possible to give folk some breathing space! Was a little too hot inside too. Apart from this the place is very much so worth a look in especially if you like strong winter brews. Go on live a little!

Attention Real Ale fans! Boasting a fine selection at all times, you're bound to find one you like. Right now there's 8 real ales on, Plus 7 real ciders too. Regularly changing ales ( Youngs Special and Adnams always on). All served just right. This is a fine pub with a nice atmosphere. Regular beer festivals are always hugely successful with a big crowd and amazing choice. The grub is very popular too with theme nights most months. As a local I can highly recommend the Half Moon. See you there!

A great selection of beer and cider available. They seem to have lots of events including Moroccan food night. I got a warm friendly welcome. This looks like a great local boozer.

Undoubtedly by favourite establishment in Hitchin. Excellent selection of ale, well kept, and a similar seletion of kosher cider. Even outside restaurant times (look out for themed Thursdays) you can order a cheese board or excellent pork pie (served with piccalilly orEnglish Mustard). Well-behaved dogs are welcome inside.Friendly staff and friendly customers. Don't expect hen parties or stag nights unless they are CAMRA members !We have friends who visit, who long for a pub like this ..... if you stay more than 3 hours, you won't be walking in a straight line !

The Half Moon has excellent beer and great food, especially the tapas menu. Went on a midweek evening for the first time in ages and found that the beer was on great form and ordered enough tapas to comfortably feed two adults for £15. Serves better value, quality food than many a restaurant.

Having heard about this pub I had to visit. Knowing I would be imbibing in the various brews I thought it prudent to use my bus pass, the bus stopped in Hitchin Market Place about 300 yards away. Went on a Tuesday, market day with the wife so she could spend time round the market and the town while I sampled the ales, joining me later at The Half Moon for lunch. Something told me I had got it right 'cause at 11.57 I entered the pub the licensee said were not open yet but come in what will you have, within 5 minutes I was joined by at least nine other men four of which ordered food. I had a pint of inferno 3.8 a.b.v. a bitter bitter but beer as it should be well kept a good temperature and lacing on the glass..Young Special next more hoppy and stronger and so it went on a beer from The Black Sheep brewery was next and then somehow I seem to have forgotten the rest but can recollect they were all good. Had a very filling sandwich of home cut ham in thick wholemeal bread and the wife had a ham baquette too much for her to eat at £6 the two! Will certainly be returning C.A.M.R.A. HAVE CERTAINLY GOT THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS RIGHT WITH THIS ONE.

If you are a Real Ale fan this is the place to visit. Always has a few session ales on pump supplemented by a wide variety of guest ales. Populated by a friendly crowd. All credit to Howard & Wendy!

Introduced by a friend, now go about once a week for really good value home made food and a lovely selection of REAL ALES always different ones to choose from.

With an ever changing array of real ales, this is an ale lovers dream pub. It's easy to access by public transport - so no worries about drinking & driving. As a bonus they serve good food at really good prices. The beer festivals (last one in April had 65 real ales on offer) are well worth going to as the serving staff are very knowledgeable and can help you make a decision on where to start.
