We walked from the valley of the rocks along the coastal path into Lynton/Lynmouth and used the cliff railway to return. Keep an eye out for the mountain goats!

We took a trip on the cliff railway recently on a gloriously sunny day. The trip only takes a few minutes but was well worth the price (£3.70 return per adult at time of writing). The views from the railway itself are stunning and the staff were all very friendly. Being water powered, the train is very quiet and very smooth, you even have the option to ride on the front platform with the driver and enjoy a unique perspective.

We visited family who live in Lynton (the town at the top of the cliff railway) and used the railway to visit the beautiful harbour and river in Lynmouth. It was a lovely experience made more enjoyable by the amazing views we took in whilst waiting the few minutes for the cliff railway.

The cliff railway has been the method of transport from Lynton to Lynmouth for 100's of years and we love it !! A quick trip down allowing you access to Lynmouth with ease and to sample the pubs without the pressure of driving. Always friendly and always smiling if you are visiting Lynton or Lynmouth it's a must.

went on this railway on a freezing cold february afternoon with the family - my 7 year old was fascinated with the water power to make it go and she was delighted to be allowed to stand with the driver on the footplate spotting mountain goats on the way up!!! have to say that not all the shops were open as it is not "touristy season" just yet but we found a few charming ones to warm up in - ensure you have cash on you because although the railway takes cards the water power museum doesnt and although the one shop that has the cash machine was open - the machine was out of order!!!! had to forgo that attraction and go back up the cliff lift!!!

The towns of Lynton and Lynmouth are wonderful in and of themselves - those views! - but made better by being connected through the Funicular railway. Water powered Victorian engineering, staffed by pleasant, informative people, this is a great way to travel. Highly recommended.

Whether you are 9 or 90 you have to see this attraction and ride the cliff railway. Great genteel fun and once at the top Lynton is a delight. A must see is the craft market and also take a walk to the valley of the goats. Even if you don't see the goats the views are breathtaking.

Wonderful way to travel from the harbourside at Lynmouth, and get to Lynton at the top without exhausting yourself! Great views from the carriages as you travel up or down. The engineering is interesting, as the whole thing is powered by water pipes from Exmoor, and used to fill the tanks under the carriages, so that the one at the top is heavier than the bottom one. When the brakes are released, the weight of the top carriage descending pulls up the bottom one. Well worth a trip.

...then this is a great way to get to Lynton. Cheap, efficient and wheelchair friendly. What is there to not like?Ray Fearnley.

There was a huge crowd for the railway and the wait was about an hour. Coming back down was quick. Both towns are lovely and both have excellent views. Approaching Lynton from the north we saw the fields flushed with pink flowers. There is a lot of pink in the cliffs and the beach is rocky with some very interesting shaped larger rocks. We enjoyed a walk along the coast. The rock wall running beside the river is good too. There were some beautiful old buildings at the top of the railway and two supermarkets. uploaded plenty of photos for this one. We spent the night in Exmoor park.

Quite an experience on this novel form of transport between Lynton and Lynmouth up the rock face.It saves a drive between the two towns.

As I love railways, I was always going to love this funicular. The staff were very friendly and helpful and explained exactly how it all works and some of the history. The views from the top were stunning. I'll definitely pay another visit and take another ride when I'm next in the area.

This is an excellent attraction, it is historic, traditional, enjoyable and the view from the top is worth the cost alone.I am amazed that anyone can say that it is expensive, if for no other reason then I am wondering what they are comparing the price to, it's not as though you have this kind of transport in every town is it, also it is a tourist town(s) so you expect to pay slightly more for things,Secondly, unless you go in November as I did, be prepared to queue, again people on here are complaining of the queues but it is a 12ish capacity train travelling between 2 popular tourist towns in the high season, what were they expecting? In brief, go on this attraction, enjoy the uniqueness of it & the views. 5 stars
