This museum helped me understand the everyday life of people in the Savo region of Finland in earlier times. I enjoyed learning about burn-beating farming techniques, tar making, and other local customs. The English explanations were clear and easy to understand. I appreciated the hard work and rich culture of the Finns of earlier generations.

Liked the way it was presented, very clear - and the information helped understanding of the area. A great place to visit even if the weather is good as you can choose what you want to spend time on

The museum is very close to Savonlinna castle. While you buy ticket for the castle you can pay 1 Euro extra and get access to this museum. Museum visit for 1 Euro in Finland is not bad.Down stairs there are permanent exhibition about life in Saimaa region. There pictures and exhibitions about wood transport with steam boats in saimaa region. Upstairs there were some very interesting paintings on display. The exhibition were temporary and vary. During summer you can also see the old steamboats used for log transport and try to get an insight of life of those on board.

Quite small museum but the history of Savonlinna and the Saimaa area was presented in an interesting way. As the Saimaa area is known for being popular amongst Finns to have their summer houses in there, in the museum you could design your own cottage on a Saimaa scale model map.

Interesting little museum, right outside of the castle - on the walk back to the city. The staff are really knowledgable and helpful - ask them about the Saimma seal - and watch the video they have on the seal - most endangered seal in the world and found only in Lake Saimma

Much of the interpretation is in English and good exhibitions upstairs

One should visit Savonlinna in the summer time. The big Lake Saimaa is warm, beatifull and it´s possible to enjoy good concerts and Savonlinna Operafestival in July every year. The town itself is small, the lake is everywhere; so You can enjoy beautifull landscapes, have a short or longer cruise on the lake, eat good food at different nice restaurants or try local fish and specialities from the market place. There are also other interesting places and museums close to Savonlinna, Punkaharju area with a fine forest museum Lusto, a very nice art center Retretti with interesting art caves. I can recommend, try this beautifull summe town.

You must attend this tremendous attraction which is held from early July to early August annually in the castle.....take a tour of the castle; take a cruise on one of the many boats in the harbour; attend the market in the city square; so many things to do and see; we are going back for sure; loved it!!
