As you slowly approach the monastery driving almost halv an hour from Tulcea passing the turn-offs to two other monasteries (one of these Saon) you start getting excited and prepared until you reach the wooden highland which provided a good environment for monks. The interior of the church is beautiful, but also presently the paintings are being restaurated. Imagine how you would live in the cells where the monks live next to the church.

The monastery is one of several in the region but one of the few remaining with monks using it. The monastery is behind a wall with two beautiful carved wooden large doors allowing for entrance into a courtyard. The courtyard has several long buildings along the side which are in use. The interior of the church is beautifully done with lots of well preserved icons along the walls. A large chandelier hangs from the domed ceiling and a large image of Christ dominates the ceiling. This is a very impressive place to visit. It is also handicap accessible as vehicles can park close by and there is a ramp into the church. Well worth the visit. Primitive WC facilities are available.

A beautiful small monastery with a lovely garden and a bell tower from which swallows swirl about... Famous for its icons and relics, the church is surrounded by the monks cells.

Cocos Monastery is located 6 km from the village Niculitel, in Tulcea County in a secluded spot at the foot of a hill and is surrounded by forest. The monastery was established in 1833. Besides the impressive collections of fine and decorative art, archeological finds and old coins, it shelters the bones of the oldest Christian martyrs discovered in Europe (Zotikos, Attalos, Kamasis and Phillipos). The church is surrounded by a garden with beautiful flowers and the monks' cells form a wall around it .From the 3 monasteries in this region this is the only one inhabited by monks It is truly a wonderful place to relax in the middle of the nature
