My wife and I hired electric bikes from Electric Escapes and cycled from Westport to Mulranny along The Great Western Greenway for lunch. This is a great cycle track shared by walkers. The scenery especially from Newport to Mulranny is amazing. Will return to complete the final leg to Achill. Numerous tea stops along the way.

Myself and my wife set off with intentions to cycle from Westport to Newport. This then became mulranny. Then it seemed achill was just around the bend. We stopped for coffee in achill and set about the return journey. I don't cycle, neither does my wife. Was it hard? Yes? It's a fair distance. The hot shower afterwards seemed to wash the aches away. We are delighted to have done it. And on reflection bit was amazing. We would do it again.

Stayed in Westport first week in March and found the green way on the 2nd Day. Walked down to the quay on the Sunday - worked up an appetite and then back again to walk off the lunch. Also went the other way to get to the Westpoint shopping centre and train station. During the week we found a number of off road footpaths in the town including a circular walk from the town to the Quay and back through the grounds of Westport House.

My fiancé & I are into Hillwalking so we decided to walk the greenway one day in March . We drove to Mulranny & left the car there while we walked to Achill. We met up with other walkers along the way from Dublin, Kerry & even as far away as France. There were loads of couples with families . It was great to see the babies all snug in the little carriers at the side of the bikes while the younger children cycled behind their parents, these can be rented from cycle shops in Westport & Newport at very low cost. They also have electric bikes for people who are not that energetic or They will also collect you if you only want to go one way. They have a wonderful service.! All so friendly& delighted to be out on the lovely safe walkway without any cars or danger for the children. It is so safe with beautiful scenery all along the way. At the end of the walk it began to pour down with rain. We called into a hotel in Achill to have a bowl of soup. We were so wet there was more steam coming out of our clothes than the soup we were drinking. But we really enjoyed it. Another day we walked from Newport to Mulranny. But that day we forgot to bring water & money with us but we called into a pub plus resturant in Teirinar called Navins. We explained that we were out walking on the greenway but forgot to bring money with us or water. The owner sat us down not only gave us water but also a cup of coffee & offered to give us a meal & we could pay him next time we were passing. What service!! Where would you get it? Only In the west of Ireland !!! Needless to say we have visited that pub several times since. That's the kind of friendly service that's remembered. They are the nicest couple with lovely staff. Plus a lovely open raging fire that is so welcoming there are two reviews on the wall from a pub spy who visited & he gave a raving review too. No wonder. We will be back again. Thanks for your trust & really caring service .

Loved the cycle trip westport to achill. As we hadn't been on a bike for over 20 years we were collected for the homeward trip. It was great fun. We had a fine day, the scenery was beautiful. We enjoyed it and can fully recommend it.

....To be cycling off road and away from any traffic...to be able to go at your own pace and to stop as the mood takes you....to be able to cycle two abreast and chat on the way...wonderful views and on a deserted February day the peace is palpable. The greenway is very do-able even for those who do not normally cycle as a mode of transport. Be aware that the last part of the route into Achill is on the public road as is the way into Newport...both areas could do with a designated cycle lane , after being spoiled on the greenway the change is quite unsettling!

We'd set off early from Dublin on a guided tour by our cousin out to the so called Wild Atlantic Coast. After stopping at Stokestown Park (Irish National Famine Museum) for lunch - (I know - how ironic!), we arrived in Westport in the mid-afternoon.After the long drive we needed some fresh air and exercise, and took a walk towards Westport Quay, past the Manor House (didn't want to pay to get into the walled grounds). The Quay area had a variety of restaurants, bars and cafes, which we would have visited earlier in the day. Tide was out. Cute signs of Bikes (to encourage exercise for the Great Western Greenway or did I learn there was another meaning?? Also caught the sun over Croagh Patrick (a pilgrimage site).Took the Great Western Greenway back, about a 5 mile hike, over an undulating, paved pathway, through neighbourhoods and woods. Savour the quiet, peaceful countryside! An invigourating walk! We were ready to quench our thirst at Matt Malloy's (justly famous for it's live music every evening starting at 9:30.) It's cosy and hot and authentic!

Was really taken in by such a great place to have a walk away from noisy roads so safe for families to take children for a walk and cycling there bikes. All one can hear is the birds singing and the animals in the fields its pure heaven. A must for all. Great asset to Westport well done to all concern.. Really enjoyed it will be back soon.

Do not leave Westport without renting bikes and cycling the greenway!! The cycle path is paved with only a small stretch beside the road so it is extremely safe, don't worry. Just bring plenty of water and some rain gear just in case.... I would stay in Westport just to cycle this again.
