We visited Chateau de Fontainebleau on our recent trip to Paris. We were looking for an easy day-trip to get away from the hustle and bustle, but something a little different than usual. Both my husband and I had been to Versailles separately years ago, and neither of us was that interested in going back. When I went, it was May & extremely crowded. I hardly had time to look at the rooms because the crowds just kind of pressed you on. Chateau de Fontainebleau was a totally different experience. It was not crowded at all. There were other people there, yes, but in each room there were 2-3 other people, tops, and we were often by ourselves. Also, from my recollection of Versailles, there aren't nearly as many rooms open as there are here. I also remember there being scant descriptions - it seemed Versailles wants you to buy the audioguide. Fontainebleau had descriptions in each room in French, English, and Spanish. Only a few times did we encounter an explanation in French only. Fontainebleau is chock full of French history, too - 7 centuries of royals lived here, including Napoleon, Marie Antoinette, Louis XIII, and Louis XV. It's amazing to think of all of the truly influential people who walked the hallways. The chateau also contains the room where Napoleon abdicated/was forced from the throne. The museum does not allow strollers, but does provide large storage lockers. We were able to push our stroller directly into one without folding it up. We wore the baby in a baby carrier and he was fine. The day we visited was rainy and overcast, so the grounds did not look very nice. I'm sure they would be much nicer on a sunny day, and even better in spring when everything's in bloom. The grounds themselves are free to visit and are quite extensive. We had no problem taking the bus to the chateau from the train station - the stop is right outside and the bus is marked "Chateau". If you come by train from Paris, you can use that same ticket to ride the bus, no need to pay again. We bought a zone 5 day ticket in Paris, which covered the metro, train, and bus. Also, thanks to all the other reviewers - we read the previous reviews when deciding to go and found the info very helpful!*if you like my review, I hope you'll click the 'helpful' button; those of us who write reviews love to get them and it motivates us to do more :) *

We went to went Chateau de Fontainebleau today. It was a beautiful spring day with lovely weather. Perhaps I had quite high expectations, however the chateau wasn't as amazing as what I had expected it to be. The gardens were nice and my favourite part was walking across the road to the forrest where the wild flowers were growing.

Weather it's a cloudy or a sunny day, the Chateau of Fontainebleau wellcomes you in the same gracefull manner. You have the opportunitty to visit the interior and the surrowndings as well. You won't be dissapointed for taking the time to see this beautiful, rich of history place near Paris. The gardens have wonderfull places where you can take a quick picnic with friends. Worth mentioning also that the city of Fontainebleau is built arround the chateau....

This is simply an amazing place. The extensive gardens and woodland surround the pretty town of Fontainebleau but the Chateau itself is the main reason people visit. From the time you walk through the elaborate gates you are very much aware of the Kings, Queens, Emperors and Empresses who have walked the way before you. The rooms are exquisite and the descriptions are detailed (if you like detail, the audio guide is good value). All in all, a fabulous day.

We enjoyed walking around the gardens and sitting in the shade on a very hot day. Indoors was very interesting too.

Of course on the outskirts of Paris, (but a quick train trip and then a walk) this palace / chateaux / castle is a wonderful example of French history. I was fortunate enough to be there on a quiet of season day, so had the place almost to myself to browse.Lots of history and good english guide books/ leaflets available.

While in Paris, we decided to board a train to travel about 40 minutes to Fontainebleau-Avon Station to take an excursion to Chateau de Fontainebleau. We were so glad that we made the journey, as the castle, its surroundings and the town itself is simply serene & gorgeous. Unlike Chateau de Versaille, Chateau de Fontainebleau is less crowded as there were not many visitors and I was told that it has always been so. There's a long history behind this chateau as it was the residence of French monarchs from Louis VII through Napoleon III and it was quite pleasant to see the rooms where these famous people used to congregate, dine, rest & retire during those medieval days. The furnishing inside this chateau is simply stunning and the garden at the back of the chateau is massive and beautiful. The quietness and the lack of tourists to this beautiful chateau, made it feel as if we were transported back to the days where the kings and queens used to rule France. A visit to Chateau de Fontainebleau is highly recommended.

Worth a visit. The way that the Chateau was built and has been preserved gives the feel of traveling backwards through time as you go from room to room.
