Even in winter a really nice place to visit away from the city. 30 mins on the train (which costs about 1.40euro from memory). And the beach is a beautiful long sandy beach to walk along. Must be fabulous in summer!Seats and things to sit on along the way. We took our lunch and ate it out there. Was a great day out of Riga!

We could not visit Riga without a trip to the Baltic coast. We had hoped for frozen sea but although it was February a mild winter (Latvia mild not UK mild) meant the sea was unfrozen. We specifically chose a beautiful sunny day with blue sky for the trip which is a 40 minute train ride from Riga. This only costs around 2 euros and the trains are comfortable and very clean. The beach was pretty much empty but beautiful and we had a very bracing walk in -10 C. Hoods up, ear muffs on, scarves around nose and mouth. It certainly was bitterly cold. After that it was time to find a café and hot chocolate and cake. Yummy. The little town of Majori was interesting and cosy. Nice shops. The river by the station was frozen and all in all it was well worth the trip if you do not mind the cold. Probably very lovely in summer too.

Nice beach but do not plan too long to stay there - when we went it was very strong wind and after 5 minutes you are dreaming about hot tea or hot chocolate in some cafe. But to us it was a great day out, very close to Riga and for a few hours it was worth taking this trip.

I've been here a few times in summer and winter. In summer the golden sand and abundance of beach bars makes it a great place to hang out. In winter make sure you bring a warm jacket!

A long sandy stretch of beach perfect for walking. Lots of little shops and cafes to explore. Not far from the city.

The morning run on the Beach in Jurmala is just great i was 1 hour on the way for 10 km out of the 32 km, with such a fresh nordic air.

White kilometric (about 20 km) sandy beach, just 1 hour outside Riga. You can find everything you need and more (bar, restaurants, clubs, wide range of sports, etc.) to spend a relaxing day on the beach. If you have already visited the city, pass by here too.

What a nice beach.Loads of clean sand. The tide is active but the water is not too deep. People walking, cycling and running.Weather not conducive to swimming but there were 2 mad guys swimming, it couldn't have been much if at all above zero!!A very clean beach with a long 2 metre wide seaweed bed near the shore.Apparently it goes on for miles ...

We took the train from Riga which cost €4.90 for two people return and it was nice to see the surrounding area outside of Riga. The beach was huge with clean white sand and I would love to revisit in the summertime, it was nice to escape the city and we spent a number of hours walking along the beach which was very peaceful and they are plenty of seats to sit and watch the world go by. We then walked along the main street which was quiet but I imagine would be very busy in the height of summer, the wooden houses are amazing and this would be a great place to revisit.

Cold sea but magic atmosphere - that's what u can find in Jurmala. As it was a priority for me to visit Jurmala while in Latvia - I did my best. This extra white sand amazed me a lot. Cold sea and pines on the panorama - something u can't find everywhere. My advice is next - grab a good book or company and go there for a whole day while in Latvia, It's so peaceful and calm - u can stay on ur thoughts all day long.

Jurmala is a resort town situated around 23 km from Riga. We went by train to this town. All an experience. Think we were in the old style Soviet trains. What got us, was how we exited the train. It stopped & as long as another train was not approaching we could all get off & walk across the track. The town its self with markets is a good morning spent. We walked to the beach & along it. I would recommend a visit to the town while in Latvia, you want to experience as much as possible .It is a lovely country & could easily return. Will post a few photos.

We visited the beach out of season so it is difficult to comment on what it would be like in season but the sand was amazing, very clean and white. There were plenty of chaning facilties and toilets along the beach too.

avoid Jurmala during New Wave song contest in July.prices like Monaco.if not possible look for place to stay nearby.distances are silly and you will save zillions.

Stunning beach that just goes on for ever........ This is a great day out from Riga. An easy short train journey (we got off at Majori) that puts you into a totally different environment and makes a brilliant interlude in a city break. Totally recommended.
