Quaint, snack town feel, near Formia. Visited the open market. Gorgeous old churches, narrow streets with lots of shopping. Architecture is beautiful. People lovely. Recommend.

We loved Gaeta. Not at all touristy. Easy to get around as it is very level with few hills to climb. Do not miss Via Indipendenza. This is where you will see the locals. Went to the municipal center to look up birth records of grandparents. They could not have been any more helpful. They bent over backwards to help even though we could not find any records and their English was very limited.

loved the walk from 1 end to the other, its flat, plenty Italian traditions to experience one being fish sold every day fresh from the fishing boats, the back alleys are full of traditional shops and each day offers something different. the town has plenty of shops and there is a local market 1 day per week which again was a great experience.

The old town of Gaeta is right on the Mediterranean in a sheltered bay north of Naples. You can see the island of Ischia in the distance. There is a working naval port with ships. There are also lots of yachts and other boats moored around the marina. The old town is lit up at night with lots of cheap places serving great food - try Chicco d'Oliva.

Quaint town with 2 distinct personalities - old town and new town. It is not for someone who is looking for nightclubs and a high degree of activity. Even the tourist attractions are rather low-key. We stayed at Hotel Gajeta, which was located in-between the two, across from the naval base. The base, while a bit unattractive, was interesting, and provided us with the national anthems of the U.S. and Italy each morning. A short walk into old town is a nice stroll along the water or up a very steep hill. A couple of lovely churches to view, although the one that dominates the town was locked. Difficult to find a small restaurant on a Wednesday evening, but we did find a small deli where we managed to purchase salami, crackers and some amazing homemade red wine.New Gaeta is much more bustling and it's fun to go down to the harbour in the late afternoon and watch the fishing boats bring in their catch. The fish market is vibrant and there are more dining options (with seafood of course) near the fish market. We visited the church in the rock, but the grotto was closed as it was the middle if the day. That was something that we didn't run into throughout our travels in more touristy areas - the afternoon closures. It made Gaeta seem more genuine, less touristy and we enjoyed the change of pace.Would we stay here again? Probably not, although we're glad we discovered Gaeta. There are so many other places to discover in Italy.

Here is a chance to see Italy without all the foreign tourists. Old town, with the Church is a must see.

an unusual touristic place..for walkers and lovers of the nature. The silence will be with you and take a chance to visit it in March or April....not in summer, otherwise you will not enjoy it so much because too hot.

This city shows you a bit history of the Europe, you can enjoy so wonderful reaturants like Il Follaro Ristorante. And you can enjoy beach and radical sports too. So it is a city for many kinds of people and tastes.

I fell in love with Gaeta back in October 2010. It is the most gorgeous little town, with the worlds nicest ppl. If you are in Italy, spend a few days in Gaeta, walk around Gaeta Vecchia, go to Il Molo for gelato, Rendezvous for beers and dinner, and Christian Bar for some fun. When Im there I grab breakfast and I go sit on the waters edge near the Naval base and just let my mind shut off and enjoy the view.

Gaeta has many churches, museum, good restaurants, bars, and excellent gelateria , just a few minutes from the Campanile of the Cathedrale. This being a port, offers excellent seafood. The old town winds up to the new church, half way to the top of the hill. A nice walk with lots of old Roman ruins were incorporated into houses built up the hill and below the fort, now being restored. The crypt of the Cathedrale was newly restored is opened this summer, till October, 2013. The Cathedrale is under restoration, cannot be visited.Plenty of boats and yatches are tied along the wharf. As of today, the water is blue, clear and inviting. There are many small fish about, and I had seen many men fishing just off the same wharf, although not today. Perhaps it is because the sun was boiling hot at noon. Further along, where the beaches are, I could see people swimming in this September day !

This is such a beautiful ocean side city in the region of Latina. Great beaches and nice nightlife! There are tons of lovely shops and cafes, this is a very bustling place on the weekends! If you are near or in the region of Latina I definitely recommend a day trip here...not more than two days because the whole town of Gaeta can be explored within a day or two it is not very big.
