The walk along the old walls is interesting and the view of the town and Cathedral is really good. The Arch of Trajan is in very good contìdition and should not be missed. If you are in the harbour it is just a short walk.

As a very big fan of the best of all roman emperors, I was very enthusiastic about the chance to visit an arc erected in his honour. The Arc didn'nt disappoint me! It is in a very good condition, the reliefs and the structure are very recognisable and impressive. Beside the arc itself, you can walk along the new and the medieval/historical wall of the harbor and get a great lokk at the busy harbor of Ancona. The best way to visit the Arc is as part of the self-guided walking tour trough Ancona. The Maps and guides for this you can get at the Tourist Information center. The tour is a fantastic way to see the best sights in Ancona and offers great background informations and recommendations for your stay - and it's free!

If you come into Ancona by ferry in the early morning, stay for a few hours and get the feel of this surprisingly interesting city. We found free parking just to the left in a small lot after getting off the ferry. There were plenty of spaces, but they filled up as the day went on. From there you can walk to everything. We saw Trajan’s arch within a short distance. A few steps up from the ferry dock, you find the church of Santa Maria della Piazza. Well worth the visit even when it’s closed. The exterior is beautiful. There’s a Tourist Info office near there-it’s not well marked but if you ask around you’ll find it. A walk up the hill brings you to the Cathedral. Fabulous views from up there! Another highlight was the “Field of the Jews”, an old Jewish cemetery up on another hill overlooking the sea. We had a quick take-out lunch from Cremeria Rosa in one of the main squares and ice cream at their larger restaurant. Delicious! If we’d had more time, we’d have eaten a full meal there. Everything we saw looked great.

This Roman arch is very impressive although slightly at odds with its surroundings on the edge of the modern ferry port - however I felt in a way it added to its charm! I thought it was wonderful to be able to walk under such an impressive monument that is almost 2000 years old (but then I am a history buff). It would be nice to have a bit more information about the arch at the site ................ also that it's companion arch (Arco Clementino) is a modern addition (1738). All this information is available in the very informative Itinerario Storico available from the Tourist Office.

Amazed by its age and appearance. We were up by the cathedral looking down at the port so didn't get very close but read up on it in the map guide

Whilst in the sea port of Ancona you need to walk down to the end of the ferry port to find the The Arch of Trajan (115BC), It is a grand structure over looking the ocean. You could imagine the honor of being one of the triumphant solders returning & walking through the gate after a victory. Parts of the walled perimeter still exists where you can walk & get a great view. Its a pity that some of the modern day port has cut through the walls but the arch is worth a look, then continue you walk around teh ferry port as there are hidden preserved columns to find as well. There is another Arch "Arch of Clementino" that is also worth a look.

One of the most imposing Roman Arches I 've seen with the stairway up, at the end of the harbour pier

It's right in the midst of the busy modern port, and there's nothing to see by the arch.

The Arch of Trajan is almost 6 stories high and was erected in the first century as an entrance to the causeway atop the harbor wall in honor of the emperor who had made improvements to the harbor. This is considered one of the finest Roman monuments in Le Marche. The arch stands on a high podium with wide flights of steps on each side. This arch sits amongst the port of Ancona flanked by cranes and ship building and you will have to walk along the port to visit. This makes for an interesting contrast of the ancient Roman against the modern port.
