Gemstones are so overwhelmingly beautiful that one tends to forget the hardship involved in getting them out of the mines. That is why it is good to see a historic mine which is famous the world over, first-hand.

The only mine of its kind open for visitors in Europe. A very interesting phenomena to see. You have to drive through a military compound on your way to the car park and then there's a small walk of about 10 minutes to the entrance and little shop. Good deals to be had at the shop for fossils and gemstones. The tour inside the mine was well managed. Our guide spoke German but did so slowly and clearly. For our children they had headsets so they could follow in Dutch.

It is pretty amazing... you get a hard hat to wear on the tour... and you see gem crystals in the mines in their natural form! It is an amazing opportunity to see a real gemstone mine that once was a working mine in the gemstone capital of Europe!

Visiting the Steinkaulenberg Gemstone Mine for sure is a must have when coming to Idar-Oberstein. The one and a half hour guided tour shows you all the aspects of mining gems besides a lot of visible gems in the walls. The guide tells the story in German, but headsets are available with Dutch, Danish, English and French language.

Visiting the Stienkaulenburg Gemstone mine was one of the many highlights of visiting Idar-Oberstein. the guide used Multi lingual handsets and waited till the audio was complete before moving on. the surrounding are is equally amazing and worth looking through the park setting

This little 'gem' is a few miles above the town of Oberstein which can be easily reached by car or train. We cycled there and caught the bus to the top of the hill and then walked a mile or so to the mine entrance. Its the only open and accessible working left in Europe.The tour is interesting and gives you a good idea of the history and difficulties involved in tracking down and extracting the gem stones. There are also plenty of geodes on display here in the walls and floor of the passages.Well worth a visit if you are in the area and follow it up with a visit to the gemstone museum in Idar.

Kurze Anfahrt ( ca. 15 Min von Idar Oberstein ). Eine Führung dauert kurze 45 Minuten. In der Edelsteinhöhle erfährt man über die Entstehung, Lagerung, Gewinnung und Verarbeitung der Edelsteine. Sehr interressante optische Eindrücke über verschiedene Arten von Steinen und deren mühselige Entdeckung und Bergung werden anschaulich dargestellt.

Ich war dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal in der Mine. Der Weg ca. 400m ausgeschrieben, waren gefühlt etwa 600m und teils sehr steil und mehrfach Bergauf und Bergab. Für Menschen, die schlecht Luft bekommen, etwas anstrengend. Es sind auf dem Weg einige Sitzmöglichkeiten. Auf dem Weg zur Mine bekommt man durch den Lehrpfad schon eine Einstimmung auf die Edelsteine. Es geht durch einen im Wald angelegten gut begehbaren Pfad. Auch für Rollstuhl- und Kinderwagen sehr gut angelegt, jedoch sollte der Rollstuhl auch gebremst sein, da halt teilweise sehr streil. An der Mine angekommen, gibt es Toiletten, einen Kleinen Shop. Die Besuchsdauer ist ca 45min. HUNDE sind an der Leine auch erlaubt. Mit Helm geht es zunächst zum Gruppenfoto, dann durch die Mine. Wunderschön angelegt sind die Edelsteine dann im Gestein zu erkennen. Fotografieren ist auch erlaubt. Ein wunderschönes Erlebnis, abgesehen des anstrengenden Weges zur Mine und hinterher wieder zurück zum großräumigen Parkplatz.

In een zeer mooie omgeving kan je de enige "mijn" in Europa bezoeken. Niet zo spectaculair maar toch de moeite. Goed toegankelijk. Even verderop kan je zelf op zoek naar onder andere agaten in het zoekveld, wel te betalen. Voor een excellente Spiesbraten, rij naar het vliegveld van Idar-Oberstein.

Hoewel minder dan een uur, was de rondleiding interessant. Alleen in het Duits, maar dusdanig duidelijk dat het met was basiskennis goed te volgen was.

Eine Führung durch das ehemalige Bergwerk besticht durch eingeschlossene Achatdrusen und Quarze, die hier im 18-19 Jht.von Hand abgebaut wurden.Absolut empfehlenswert.Schürfen kann man sich sparen, da vorher ins Erdreich eingebrachte Rohsteine zum Vorschein kommen die meistwertlos sind.
