On a recent trip to Germany we took a tour of the Erzquell Brewery noted locally for its brewing of Kolsch beer. The visit gave an insight into the history and techniques used to produce this popular drink which by law can only be made in an area in and around the city of Cologne. The guide was very informative giving a mixture of verbal and video information and practical demonstration. Tasting of the Kolsch was a favourite part of the tour. At the end of the tour which lasted one to one and a half hours we were taken to a bar where we enjoyed a magnificent spread of cold meats, cheeses and local breads complemented by a selection of the beers brewed by Erzquell. No limit was placed on the amount of drink or food on offer. Only the official timing of the tour at 3 hours total duration brought this extremely interesting and enjoyable Kolsch experience to an end. Cost of the visit was 10 euros per person which included everything previously described and a Kolsch beer glass each to take away as a souvenir. A shop is available for purchasing additional gifts. If you are visiting this area of Germany then don't miss out on this most hospitable of tours and take a nominated driver!!!!
