I took a tour of the synagogue and was very touched by the history of the place and the Jewish contribution to the economic and cultural life of the city of Veria.

The synagogue is an old stone building in a smale square in the middle of the jewish quarter right at the river in Barbuta area (the most picturesque neighborhoud of Veroia). One has to find the key keeper in order to visit the place which is very well maintened.

This building is on the site of a former synagogue in which Apostle Paul preached when he fled to Berea (Veria) from Thessalonika. It is therefore important to anyone interested in New Testament history. This building is also a distinct reminder of the Jews who must never be forgotten who once lived in this community. By visiting, the visitor is reminder of the tragedy of hundreds from this small area who tragically lost their lives in the German concentration camps. To visit upstairs, there is the sad sight of school desks, in a place that was brimmed with life. Architecturally the interior is also worth seeing, and the guide who does the work voluntarily provides an excellent description of the history of the Jewish community and building.

Soigneusement restaurée, mais inanimée : quel dommage que la communauté juive de Veroia, en majorité assassinée lors de la deuxième guerre mondiale, ne soit plus là pour lui rendre sa spiritualité et son environnement.
