There are 16, each in its own way beautiful. Last weekend I was in Vrdniku and Krusedol. All are in very nice surroundings.

Near by the river Danube and the city of Novi Sad, lays the mountain Fruska gora. We could say that she is the lungs for all the people around. Very old forest with numerous species of trees, 14 wonderful lakes, pathways between, pure oxygen, I guess it might be enough to enjoy.

I visited Fruska Gora while in Novi Sad. The mountains are beautiful and there are several monasteries to visit. All of them are old with fantastic art work and architecture. We visited among others Krušedol and Grgeteg. Fantastic places worth visiting while in Northern Serbia.

The monasteries around Fruska Gora are just what you want monasteries to be: tucked away, quiet, picturesque, quaint but solemn. They are well maintained by the monk and nuns and full of colors in the summer. I assume that they are even more 'monasterial' in the winter, when the cold invites a greater silence.

Hire a guide from the Novi Sad tourist agency and combine with other local attractions. The monasteries make and sell excellent rakija and honey.Alternatively ask the tourist agency for a planned hiking route between different monasteries, the forest odd Fruska Gora is a treasure of central Europe

A beautiful collection of monasteries in the Fruska Gora hills. I can't imagine seeing all 15 or 16 monasteries but 2 or 3 would suffice. My favourite was Staro Hopovo, which was tiny but in a lovely setting set among the trees without a soul to be seen. The monasteries are designed more for pilgrims rather than tourists, there is no English signage, no explanation of anything and certainly no guides, brochures etc. but you can certainly get the idea by just walking around. It was quite unusual being the only tourist present, even the monks were no where to be seen at some of the monasteries, so it provided a unique experience in that sense. The surrounding countryside is lovely and makes for a lovely setting.

Two teen age atheists (sons), a church historian (husband), an Episcopal priest (me), took a tour with Grada. The boys reported this morning that it was the best tour ever. The older said, "I was afraid we'd spend hours looking at every art work in every monastery, but instead we learned a little history and got a sense of the place. They were in beautiful locations and it's just incredible that 500 years ago people put that much effort into making art that is still with us today." The younger said, "My favorite part of the tour was the bee museum. I loved the exhibits of the primitive hives and the story of the man who developed the American hive." We loved the Patriarch's court in Sremski Karlovci. The curator and founder shared the history of the art and how it got there. The enthusiasm and delight of the younger curator was just infectious as he talked about the symbolism and the unique features of some of the icons. It was a full day with a mix of big views and serious conversations about politics, history, theology and fun walks in the woods, through Sremski Karlovci and around the farm. We tried delicious new wines and honeys and had a fantastic lunch at Perkov salaš. I went home feeling like I'd made a new friend in Grada (we'll plan another trip with him soon). I carried a bouquet of wild calendula and wild garlic from the Perkov farm and nearly 100 photos. Fruška Gora is beautiful, full of the Spirit and endowed with the grace of tradition, the complexity of centuries of conflict and the hope for a harmonious future in which people and the natural world will thrive.Send Grada a note if you want to take a tour. The monastaries are really something to see - so beautiful. We had a tour of probably 6 or 7 - all different. Some very small and some quite large.

For a catholic italian like me these monasteries were beautiful and unexpected; I visited Velika Remeta, Krusedol and Novo Hopovo. They are in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by amazing natural country landscape and small villages, and hide beautiful gems like exquisite monks and intimate churches. They truly inspire faith and devotion. They are well hidden (except for Krusedol) so you need a good map or a navigator (I used googlemaps and all went ok) in order to find them. You can also buy some genuine local products like potatoes, walnuts, ajvar and jams from local farmers in the stands on the side of the streets. By the way, pay attention because the streets are quite bad and full of holes. I'm looking forward to go back again and visit the other monasteries!

We actually stayed in Sremski Karlovci rather than Novi Sad. They are located quite near, but we preferred the small town to the larger city. We hired a guide, Grada, who provided a lovely day touring both some special highlights of Sremski Karlovci and the beautiful Fruska Gora monasteries. Though we didn't see them all, what we saw were breathtakingly gorgeous. The wooded mountain settings indeed added to the peacefulness. The history of the monasteries is fascinating and the architecture of each is distinct. The frescoes are superb. (I am running out of superlatives!) If you are in the area you must stop to see at least a few of the monasteries. We would also suggest that you consider hiring a guide as the monasteries are not easy to locate on your own. (If you would like information on the guide we used, please feel free to contact us through Trip Advisor. That's how we found him, too.)

these are beautiful monasteries in the fruska Gora region. They are quite close to each other but you need a car if you want to visit them or you could go with an organized tour from Belgrade.

this is very unexpected and definitely a must see in the Balcan region!!!we visited 8 of the about 20 monasteries, some very popular but some rather unknown are very much worth a visit!it is difficult to get English information, but in the very populare ones , you can buy a book with informationthere are maps, but not for sale, so if you see one, make a photo of it, you can use when driving to anotherbe aware to be clothed decent: no naked shoulders, knees,... long sleeves and trousers are recommended for women an men

We were only able to see two of the monasteries (Krusedol and Novo Hopovo), but visiting them was one of the highlights of our trip. The frescoes were breathtaking, and the history of the area is well worth learning.

Fruska Gora Monasteries are wonderful places to visit in Serbia. The area is not far from Belgrade airport , around 50 km by highway to the west. Leaving highway - exit Ruma. The best way is to use professional guided tours. If you like monasteries and history that is the right place to visit. You will need at least full day. Also during visit enjoy in nice village restaurants and vine house with excellent vine. the area is one of the most famous for vine production in Vojvodina province of Serbia

like Elizabeth88, once in Novi Sad,I have had the chance to make a tour of Fruska Gora Monasteries (5 ) and made a stop to discover the serbian''Bermet'', very special aromatic wine, and to experience their honey ''sesame flavored''...hhhh at the Zivanovic's, plus a stop in a farm with very sympathetic guests where we can eat the meal of the day outside under the trees in a memorable setting !I warmly recommand to get in touch with this very sympathetic guide - grada365@gmail.com - if you want to enjoy this essential part of the Serbian patrimoine in a splendid nature, you will never forget.Nature-History-Art-Tasting- and sharing-- a complete human experience!
