Beautiful interior with a lot of character. Interesting to see a Baroque interior unlike the more typical Byzantine interiors of Serbian churches.

We had an amazing visit to the cathedral. We took lots of photos of the beautiful exterior and its pointed twin spires. The interior is quite beautiful with a golden iconostasis and ornate frescoes. But we were in for an additional treat. Just as we exited and had walked about a block away, we saw probably 100 young men who are students of the priesthood walking toward the church. We went back in and were immersed in the sounds of their young voices chanting during a service. It was one of those experiences of "right time right place" that are priceless as you travel.

The Cathederal of St. Nicolas is a nice example of a cathedral in a small town. While the town is small it still he location of the Bishop. It is built in Baroque style and the real highlight of it is the interior. If you visit Sremski Karlovici it is should be visited.

The Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas was completed in 1762 and from the outside it looks pretty ordinary. But on the inside, the iconostasis is the height of Baroque work in Vojvodina and the rest of the interior is full of color, beautiful stained glass and paintings. In 1699, Sremski Karlovci was the site of the Treaty of Karlowitz negotiated between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy League (which included the Habsburg Dynasty). As a result of the treaty, Sremski Karlovci and other areas of northern Serbia became part of the Habsburg Empire and in 1712 Sremski Karlovci became the patriarchate for the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Habsburg Empire. As a result, many Serbs who had been under Ottoman rule emigrated to this area which transformed it into a strong center for Orthodoxy and the cultural capital of Serbian Vojvodina. Even today, the Serbian Orthodox Patriarch retains the title of Metropolitan of Karlovci. The beautiful decoration on the inside of the church merits a visit and spending some time.
