Just across the river from the main city centre, and easily reached by the free chain ferry that runs every half an hour, is this faded park full of wildlife which on the one hand offers more exotic animals guaranteed and at close quarters but one the other is clearly a scaled-down enterprise! with many empty cage areas and what looked like an extensive elephant house with nary an elephant in sight. There's a fish and reptile house where some modernisation has been done, the giraffes look in rude health and the big cats and brown bears also seem in good shape, though their quarters struck me as very restricted by modern standards. Highland cattle as a zoo exhibit seemed odd to someone more used to seeing portions of them served up on a plate, and the well-populated guinea pig pen also seemed a bit off kilter. All in all an odd and sometimes depressing experience, but all the animals looked well cared-for compared to some European zoos I have seen and the entry fee, like most prices in Croatia, caused little pain to the purse. Don't expect discovery centres, displays or refreshments, this is an opportunity for a gentle stroll through pleasant riverside parkland with some unusual animals along the way
