The Westgarth cinema is in an old theatre building on High Street, which runs north through Northcote; it's about 6km from the city, and easily accessible by tram, bus or train. These days the cinema is part of the Palace Cinemas chain, which also runs the Kino (city) and Cinema Como (South Yarra). For a few decades, ending in the early 21st century, it was an independent cinema called the Valhalla and had more eclectic programming (horror movies, Rocky Horror Show, etc), like the Valhalla in Glebe in Sydney. The Palace people offer a choice of seven or eight films at any given time; they're recent release and suit a selective adult demographic. Sometimes films that are part of annual festivals (eg Alliance Francaise French Film Festival) are shown at Westgarth as well as other cinemas in the chain.
