I would have trouble expressing how impressed I was with the 3 day ride, I just did with High Country Horses. From the beautiful panoramic views, the great food, the horses, and the staff, it was all great and I'm very pleased to have ridden with them. I was quite sceptical upon learning that our group size was to be 16 riders but, after the first half day, the management, team work and horse management proved incredible and cohesive. The staff were all very helpful and informative, while the horses were extremely well tempered, agile and sure-footed. It was a great experience and I'm planning on making it back sometime to partake in their 9 day ride. Thank you Chris, Fiona, Ash, Stef, Flor, Sonya and the rest of the team. Hope to see you again in about 2 years, Cheers :)

Had a best time horse treking in the High Country. Chris and Fiona do a wonderful job and really looked after us.

Not horse riding but we did pass quite a few riders. Spectacular views wonderful countryside we left Mansfield in the Victorian High Country and travelled with our 4WD through Sheepyard Flats up onto Howitt Plains through Zeka Spur Track into Wonnangatta Station (ruins) where there were campers, motorhomes everywhere then up through Wombat Ranges over to Eaglevale (very steep and slippery and quite scarey) over to Dargo, Omeo and finally up to Coryong. (Man from Snowy River Country)Would recommend this trip but do need a sturdy 4WD and a bit of courage to do the Ranges as are quite steep and narrow with high drops on either side. The views, snow gums and peacefulness make up for it all. The camping areas are to be commended as they are by the rivers, clean toilets and fire circles. Absolutely wonderful trip.

I recently suggested to a old high school friend that we do a Snowy Mountain Horse Ride and we went with a High Country Horses's two day/one night Craig's Hut ride. I have done this ride before with this company and absolutely loved it, and having ridden with quote a few companies, I was very happy to only consider them for our two person "school reunion" horse riding camp. This particular ride is the perfect length for beginner horseriders and people wishing to camp overnight for a weekend away from the city. It''s not too short and not too long, and it fits a LOT in two days.Fiona is fantastic with sending all the information and paperwork before the ride and keeping in contact. Payment was easy by direct deposit and instalments were okay.We stayed at their Merriig Lodge the Friday night before. A very simple, but warm and comfortable long lodge with rooms off a single hall with 4 bunks and shared bathroom facilities. (Male and female separate) Very clean and very comfortable. The pub across the road is warm, friendly and does good food for a meal the night before. The next morning starts not as early as you would hate, breakfast at 7:30 or 8am I think it was. All gear is put out next to the truck for packing. I brought my own pillow in a plastic bag (keep the rain off) and backpackers backpack. Some people brought their own swags.Breakfast can be warm bacon and eggs, there is non-stop toast of all varieties, and condiments, fruit, cereal, coffee tea and juice etc. Helmets are checked if you bring your own. One couple found they had to leave theirs in the car as they had previously pulled off the "Standards" sticker. Don't pull that off your own helmet, they need to see it for safety. We visited the accessories shed for hire of drizabones (well worth it), chaps, saddle bags and boots etc. Then got in the mini bus for our lift up Telephone Box Junction. This is where meet our horses and saddle up. This particular ride was late March and happen to be an early cold weather patch. I couldn't feel my fingers to pull myself up. We rode a cold day up the mountain, saw early snow, the supply truck met us at lunch at Craig's hut and again at the campsite at Razorback, we rode about 40km all up I think. The campsite is fantastic, old and a bit musty in the rooms, with old wooden beds with mattresses, you can almost imagine the old snowy river men camping out in them while a snow blizzard beats around outside. The staff are very friendly and funny, do a great job at setting up all the warm food, cooking hot tea coffee, hot chocolate etc. Food was amazing, hamburgers for lunch with salad, salad sandwiches, home baked biscuits, chocolate slice and apple crumble, and great quality steak for dinner at the cabin, rice/pasta and vegie burgers for vegetarians. Most importantly for horse lovers, High Country Horses take great pride in their horses. They obviously love them and look after them. They are smart and attentive and you need to ride them, not just sit in the saddle. But at the same time, the staff don't make you feel intimidated or shy about riding their precious animals, they are brilliant at making you feel at ease. Especially Chris who has some great stories.I can honestly say there is not one thing I can fault this company.... nay family's business and it is well worth your money! I didn't think it could get better but this trip heading into Autumn was cold but amazing and my friend and I will treasure the experience for a long time.Remember: Gloves, beanies, extra socks, hring a swag and maybe take a blanket with your sleeping bag too! Scarves can be dangerous wearing while riding in the scrub as one girl found out. But maybe good at the campsite.
