We came in the Dry season, but still plenty of wildlife to see. Remote and unspoiled. Look for the micro bats in the Hides.

We stopped for an hour just on dark at the viewing platform above the Swamp. Despite the howling wind and rain, the Sarus Cranes and Magpie Geese turned up on cue, and dropped into the swamp to roost for the night. The dangling legs of the cranes was hilarious. We were there early Sept 13, and saw perhaps 200 Sarus Cranes and 100+ Magpie Geese come in.

Very peaceful and serene a must for bird lovers and non bird lovers alike. Worth the drive from the coast to visit as there are so many other wonderful sights in this area as well to fill in your stay for a couple of days.

Interpretive signage describes formation by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. Prolific birdlife.

I am not the bird watcher in the family but share many experiences with my wife Lynn.We had booked a few days at Crater Lakes Cottages primarily to see the Rifle Bird display but there are so many other diverse interests and activities to pursue in this region and each afternoon we would set out to explore the tablelands. The Bromfeld Swamp is an amazing one - this is a volcanic crater that is home to hundreds of brolgas and saris cranes - considered an endangered species. We arrived close to 5pm each night and were captivated by the sight of hundreds of these beautiful birds gliding in gracefully to rest for the night.Lynn has wonderful special binoculars and telescopes that pick up activities that normal eyesight cannot see - she kept saying look at the amazing greeting dance of the brolgas and I am still amazed how she can pick up such detail amongst the myriad of birds settling in.Even for the novice, this is a special buzz to add to your life's experiences.
