The entrance to Woodfired Pottery is a small lane next to a very old barn. It might seem like you're driving up the wrong driveway as there are no signs. However, at the top of the driveway is a house on the left, and straight ahead is the workshop. Do call ahead to check John is home as he does have a stall every Sat at Salamanca Market. He is very friendly, and had a nice chat with us and even showed us his kiln. He explained that the wood ash creates different colours on the glaze depending on the type of wood used. His pottery is beautiful and unique, well worth the picturesque drive.

I have collected pottery all over the world. During three months in Tasmania, I checked out the local pottery scene in depth, and grew to regard John Martin, whose studio is Woodfired Pottery, as Tasmania's best. W.P. is in rural Glen Huon, and I suggest you call in advance to be sure he is there before visiting. The pottery, showroom and kiln are at a converted barn on a farm, and we drove past his driveway turnout three times before realizing where we should turn. Martin's bowls, vases and mugs are lovely, his workmanship of high quality, and his glazes gorgeous (I especially like his green glaze). Martin typically has a pottery stall on Saturdays at Salamanca Market in downtown Hobart, but I recommend driving out to bucolic Glen Huon, as the selection there is enormous, and you'll get to chat with him.
