What a fabulous place the Subtropical Quarry Gardens is. I imagined a few succulents and some palm trees. What I saw was fabulous displays of the most amazing plants I have ever seen. I felt like I had fallen down the rabbit hole! Yes there were succulents - massive ones with flowers towering over my head. There were bromeliads in stunning colours and cacti in all shapes and sizes. The orchids were like beautiful carpets of delicate and bright colours. Walking through the gardens gasping at the delights along each side of the paths you don't realise until you look up that you have reached a large lake with a very high cascading waterfall. This place must be Whangarei's best kept secret!

I would like to point out that Whangarei Quarry Gardens is NOT a free activity, entry to the Gardens is by gold-coin donation.
