Do you have a little time to kill? The Heritage Centre has a lot of history of the Red Lake area. Watch a movie featuring the Norseman aircraft and early pioneers. Read the family history of early pioneers. Learn about the early fur trade and the founding of the gold mines in the area. Check out the artifactes found in the area as well. Got kids? Let them dress up and have fun in their little area. Nicely put together.

The Heritage Centre is a surprisingly good local museum and visitor centre. Small towns in the north all have their histories, but few have captured them in such a well curated fashion. You get a real picture of life in the north pre-contact and in the pioneering days of gold mining in the area. The building is one of those architectural gems that are few and far between in the north and the use of space for a museum and for activities is well thought through.

I went to Rd Lake in August of 2013 to visit a friend. We camped out in the Woodland Caribou Park and then when we got out, we spent some time in Red Lake visiting. We went to the Heritage Centre, and let me tell you, it's not to be missed. It has interactive displays on social history, history of gold mining and the famous Norsemen planes. The gift shop has great items (we got a tshirt). It's a must-do if you're in the area. It really brings so much more context to the town of Red Lake.
