Beautiful, secure and great place to have a nice chat with friends and family by night; great coffee at Friends Cafe. Always clean and accesible.

Try going late afternoon, so you can see the lovely cathedral (closes after around 6pm) and the "plaza" (square) as it gets dark and the fountain lights come on. Then walk to Ricomini bakery a block away and have a mallorca sandwich followed by corn ice cream with cinammon at the Rex Cream ("los chinos") almost next door -or whatever ice cream you like. A true Mayaguez experience!

Wow is very impressive and beautiful the heart of Mayaguez! The City Hall and Cathedral are very impressive. Is a interesting place for all the family!

The Mayaguez Plaza is always a nice place to visit - at any time of year it's pretty, relatively clean, and shows off some good historical architecture - definitely more of an attraction than most plazas in Puerto Rico. However, during the evening throughout the Christmas holidays (until 3 Kings Day on January 6th) the plaza really comes alive. They really go all out decorating the entire plaza in elaborate, decorative lights and displays. There's fantastic live music, tons of people, and plenty of cheap, tasty street food available. I highly recommend it. Regardless of when you go, you can see everything in 15 minutes - so definitely stop by if you're in the area.

The Christmas season brings a lighting spectacle that is hard to miss. The colonial era city hall and the Plaza are excellently decorated. Most nights, during the season, live entertainment is available.

The town plaza in Mayaguez is incredible. During the holidays there are lights every where, vendor shops with food, clothes, jewelry and souvenirs. Great place to enjoy some time with the family.

There are fountains, statues, Friends Café. It's a great place to go outside and sit to take it all in.

Go to La Plaza Colón in Mayagüez is always fun. Is situated in the middle of Mayagüez. I was there yesterday, the fountain in the middle give you happiness. I usually stop by la plaza with my family and my nephews, the best thing is that you have everything near. You want an ice cream? There is a Rex Cream. Do you want to see a show? There is the theater. And if you want to hang out there is a lot of pubs near. You want some coffee? There is Friend Café inside the plaza, they make coffee, smoothies, sandwiches, and you can sit there with your laptop to do your homework of just to surf in the web. The plaza is always alive because there is always something in there. There are art exhibitions and musical activities. On Christmas time is full of color lights and shows… oh and people. You can meet with your friends and decide what to do. But more the important thing is that is an information center where culture is promoted, there is a library in front of it and they are always doing educational things. You meet nice people there, you can see the children blowing bubbles, and you can create memories with your people. So I invite you to pass by and learn a little bit about Puerto Rico and the west zone, the plaza is a place that people of all ages can enjoy, explore the island, explore Puerto Rico.

Plaza the Colon wins the name of the expensive plaza in the island. Destroy and build tree time by the actual mayor. Mayaguez downtown is a death area. People rather stay home than go in or drive around, thank you to the City Police think are different but Mayaguez downtown keep changing into a Ghost town.

The plaza had live music and dancing on a recent Saturday night. Food trucks, vendors and beer were plentiful. It's a sleepy place for strolling in the daytime, but sometimes hopping at night. Ask the locals if anything is going on when you are there. Two hotels, the Howard Johnson and the Colonial Inn are a short walk away.

Plaza Colón, like in the majority of the Puerto Rico municipalities and Spanish heritage countries is located in the center of town. In one side is the municipality building and in the opposite side the catholic cathedral. Is a nice place to sit and rest in the shade of the threes. It have a nice coffee shop name it "Friend's Cafe" and some restaurants and cafeterias around it. Here you can see old mans playing dominoes, people selling plants or traditional puertorican lottery. In one side is located a public library where you can use internet for free. Bathroom facilities available in the municipality building. I live in Mayaguez. If you need any information, write me.

This plaza is nice and calm. The statue of colon is situated in a nice fountain. Good to take a stroll with your loved one.

The plaza colon has a historic type of beauty. The buildings surrounding the square and the local area are beautiful to look at, with old architectural detail and bright colors. The manicured trees that line up the sidewalks are quirky and the free standing coffee stand add modern charm. However, the town seems dead. My husband and I noticed the lack of people wherever we went and initially thought it was just an early closing town. After talking to our family there we learned that a lack of jobs moved many out of the town and that's lead to it becoming somewhat shut down. I thought Mayaguez and the plaza were beautiful and historic. I loved looking at the buildings, the theater, the trolleys and greenery. I really hope more people come around here because it has a lot to offer and some of the local eateries that have remained are awesome and true to Puerto Rican comfort food. I highly recommend a tour around la plaza colon and the local area.

Just some old buildings, a fountain, and a statue of Columbus (Colon). Well described and the history detailed on Wikipedia. During the Christmas season (mid-November to Mid-January) the decorations are spectacular. We always drive through to see them. The plaza is beautiful. They have cleaned up down town and put all the wires underground. Concerts and special events in the plaza are worth attending. However, the tourist value is limited. The difficulty finding it, terrible traffic, and no parking out weigh the fun. If you go any way, sample the Chinese Ice Cream place on the square. Have lunch at the Ricomini Bakery just north of the square (see my reviews).

This is one of the best Plazas in Puerto Rico. We went one Saturday night last October and enjoyed an outdoor concert. Last Saturday we came back for a Christmas concert. Had a great time, great architecture around while also enjoying a cup ot coffee at Friend's Cafe.
