Just imagine the coral caves etched out hundreds of years ago and used by the native indians. Although you may see a few bats here and there, the walls and caverns are beautiful, and cool. There are beautiful under water ponds and sreamms in side and for those who need, there is elevator access. Mother Nature shows her beauty or Wrath, depending on how you look at it in these caverns.

I visited this cave today with 3 other friends of mine. We drove 5hrs to see it. We came all the way from Santiago!!!!In the guide it says that you will spend 45min. with the guide in the cave.MY EXPERIENCE....we received the very small girl as a guide and she was not only impolite, but EXTREMELY RUDE... not enough she hardly spoke English you could not understand her... she would push you to go faster and faster, as if she was on the race track. She was not explaining anything but pushing us to go faster and faster. We did the whole route in about 7min. I was shocked as well as my friends. We were not allowed to take pictures not even without a flash. When I asked to speak to the manager they brought a lady from the reception desk. When we asked for the money back they said it was impossible. When i told them that this is not fair, they called the security which were standing with guns!!!! We felt like bunch of terrorized kids.If I knew that my 5hrs drive would turn into such horrible experience - I WOULD HAVE NEVER GOME.I would rather stay in the sun somwhere on the beach.ONE LITTLE PRIMITIVE AND UNPOLITE TOUR GUIDE WHICH WAS ASKED TO DO THE TOUR IN ENGLISH RUINED OUR WHOLE DAY - which could have been so much fun.If you go there - Demend your right to stand and marvel, - Demand your right for the proper tur guide, - Denand your right to make a memory photo....

We had a private tour of the caves. It was amazing and followed by a surprise - iguanas - over 500 of them. While the tour itself is only about 20 - 30 minutes, it is worth the trip. Be sure to bring local currency as the rate is much cheaper in local currency than US dollars. One note of caution as you attempt to find it on your own - there are many signs telling you how far it is - but we expected there to be an exit for the caves. There is not an exit - the entrance is right off the highway - you must slow down on the shoulder of the highway to make the turn.When leaving - if you want to return the way you came - be sure to stay in the left lane and watch for the 'Returno". We missed it and had to drive an extra 15 kilometers to get ourselves back to it!

We landed in La Romana on our cruise ship and were looking for a diversion. This was well worth the visit. Although cameras are not allowed, the caves are beautiful. The steps are wide enough and not very steep. We were able to use the elevator to go back to the surface. It is vey humid and our tour included bottled water. The rock formations are great and the area is very clean and well maintained.

The only way we found out about this site was from a cab driver...when it was only 5 minuets from our resort

This was the last stop on our tour and I found it rather impressive. There are 3 separate lakes in the cave system and it is really quite unique and beautiful. There is a lot of climbing and it is quite humid. At least one member of our tour had difficulties with asthma, while in the cave, so be forewarned if you suffer from breathing difficulties or have difficulty with stairs. These caves are definitely worth seeing if you are in the Santo Domingo area.

We went here while on a port stop in La Romana on a cruise in Dec.-2014. We rented a car from Avis right at the cruise port "terminal" and the caves are easy to find right off the main highway that goes west toward Santo Domingo, about 20-25 minutes including traffic in La Romana. Parking is free and entrance fee is under $8 us if you pay in pesos..but they do take us dollars at 10 per ticket. There is a tiny museum as part of the ticket booth building and we had an english speaking guide take us thru the cave included (tips appreciated). There is a 10 min walking path to get to the entrance which has some local plants displayed for you to look at. We did not experience any flying insects or mosquitos like reported in some posts, but it was Dec..The caves are well lit inside and the complex is bigger than i imagined. It is very beautiful and well thought out where they put the concrete walkways. Of course lots of steps. NOTE..if you have trouble with going UP steps, ASK if the elevator is working Before you buy your ticket! As of Dec 2..the elevator was out of service. We were there all in about 60-75 minutes, but it was the highlight of our day in Domincan Republic !!

Appeared to be newly opened and no expense spared- especially with the entrance gate!! Above ground clean and modern with new paths and iguana enclosures. Caves very well lit with new safe, smooth concrete pathways and a lift for those with walking difficulties. Guide spoke French and Spanish but no English. I am deeply suspicious that the "Taino wall paintings" were just modern graffiti but I'm no expert it was just that they were remarkably bright for their age and the damp environment and we were sure one was Mickey Mouse and there were several car manufacturer logos! Still worth a visit for the beautiful stalactites/mites etc.

Just a 5 minute drive outside bahia principe la romana. Very easy to walk in with elevator access. I am claustrophobic and felt fine inside for those weary as I was. Easiest way to see caves you will ever find. Worth it if in the area and only $300 pesos to get in with tour guide included.

The caves are beautiful and the guides are very informative about the history! They explain every detail and answer any questions with knowledgeable answers. It's a very beautiful place and its kept up clean and preserved.

This caves are really close from la romana and like 50 minutes from Santo Domingo. I went in the 80's with the Scouts. Today this place is being managed by a foundation that keep the place in vwry good condition. They constructed stairs to go in and out and also have an elevator. The walk takes around 35-45 minutes and you can see al the structures inside the cave. The walk cover like 20 % of the complete cave that has around 1 km long.Inside there are bats and you find paintings from the natives that lived around and used the cave as shelter when storms came.It cost around 10 dollars per adult.This sigthsee. Can be combinated with trip to the beach from santo domingo or a trip to santo domingo coming from La Romana hotel and resort area. They have small cafeteria. The guides are really informed and answer any kind of questions. Will go back to show to any traveler. Worth the trip.

This is actually the second time we visited the caves the first time being in 2008 - we went again with guests who had never been and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I think it is definitely worth the drive over if you are within an hour away - I would not suggest making a day trip of it unless you have never seen caves before and really want to see them. We visited again on Sept 9, 2014 and the cost was approx. USD $8 - if you can pay with Peso's you do get it a bit cheaper, but its really not a big deal.Our tour guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The caves are beautifully lit and very easily navigated - even for those who are not athletic.. the fact that there is an elevator at the end to take you upstairs an absolute plus for the weary tourist. The Iguana enclosure was cool... the big lizards were having an argument when we were there so there was that I had actually never seen before & neat to watchThe gift shop is fair - the only thing worth buying is a book about the caves - the rest can be purchased anywhere.The cafeteria was not exactly inviting... but they do have cold drink if you need itI think the most important thing to know is that the walk between the entrance of the caves and the reception area is filled with aggressive mosquito's.. really aggressive. Bring Repellent and put it on before your journey to the caves - there are restrooms on site that are very clean or apply it in the parking lot.I have never encountered a line of any sort.. we traveled in September in both 2008 and 2014 - which would probably account for the lack of activity. We basically had the place to ourselves both times. It is really too bad you cannot take photographs inside the caves (even without flash as per the guide) but the website should have some..

a nice historic walk through ancient caves. worth the trip. the caves are easy to walk through and the tour guides were very informative.

Immaculately preserved and the price of entry covers the tour guide. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to learn more about the culture.
