If you are staying at one of the resorts at Cayo Santa Maria on the north coast of Cuba, a visit to Remedios, the eight oldest European settlement in Cuba, is well worthwhile. All resorts run tours here. Included in each tour is a tour of the church, one of the oldest in the Americas. After the formal rush through with your group of 40 fellow tourists, spend a few moments and go back to this beautiful church. Be sure to look up at the painted roof. In one direction you see tulip flowers, in the other a hooded head and shoulders. Also look carefully at the thirteen historic gilded altars. See photograph captions.

Superb example of a 450 year-old Spanish Catholic church. However, the artifacts need much better conditions for preservation. Like so much else in Cuba, it needs remedial work. Huge puddle on the church floor because of a leaky roof. Needs UNESCO's help...

Hire a cab from your hotel and venture out for a half day to explore Remedios it will be highlight of your trip. The church is open for mass each day and you will be able to enter and tour it has 13 beautiful altars most gold plated, catacombs and statues. It really should not be missed there is no charge but please give them an offering they use for the poor Then you can walk around the square and get the feel for the real cuba not what you experience on the resorts. In the square there is also a market with local vendors the prices there are about half what you will pay on the resort.Additionally it also has a second church Iglesis de Buen Viaje and a small version of the statue of liberty( rather ironic in Castro's Cuba but they have carved dedication on it to cuban rev martyrs) Square has food and banos available
