Read my review of the resort. I can't possibly type all that again. In short, it was amazing. If you like snow play, deep fresh powder, and a feeling of freedom on the slopes, you will love it here.

Aside from my ideas on the hotel, the skiing itself is good. There are 3 mountains to choose from. West, East & Isola. All are accessible from either side of the road via gondola. The skiing at West mountain seems most limited and best for beginners but there are a couple short black runs up topEast Mountain is next with two longer runs then Isola being the best with the biggest varietyAll lifts and gondolas are pretty quick and if you are there on weekdays there's rarely a wait to get on. Weekends get a bit busier though with some longer queues first thing but by afternoon it spreads out a little.Good fun but maybe less challenge than Niseko

The real draw of Rusutsu is the tree skiing. The piste runs essential trace the ridges. The adventure is dropping off the ridge and skiing through the trees. Most of the tree runs end in drainage that leads back out to a run. It's pretty hard to get lost. And, like most of Hokkaido, the snow can be great. It's not guaranteed but there's a good chance. The resort more Japanese than Niseko and far less crowded. It almost felt like we had the place to ourselves.

Beautifully groomed, long, wide runs. Good facilities and food at base buildings. Little if any lift queues. Plenty of powder and great tree skiing for those that want it.

I have had some great powder days at Rusutsu and when it is on, the tree skiing is superb. The pistes are also groomed to perfection, so it is excellent for mixed groups where experts want to ski the trees and intermediates want wide, even pitches. I stay in one of the few family run pensions, Lila Huset , which is wonderful, and the resort hotel provides a weird, fantasy contrast in quirky Japanese style. There is a small number of very good izakaya restaurants to choose from. I will return!

Don't bother going to Niseko, it's over crowded with Australians compared to here. Large ski area with more space to breath. We had a fantastic day skiing here and even after two days of no snow we were still able to do some quality powder riding. The park is better than Hirafu, they have a rainbow rail here which was pretty exciting to see considering the other resorts in the area don't have much in terms for freestyle. All the lifts were high speed, and some of the gondola runs are actually pretty long. Accommodation.. Downside, impossible to get unless you stay in the hotel which is very expensive. Come here for a day trip, there is a daily shuttle from Hirafu I think it was roughly 6,500¥ for bus and all mountain pass. There was another company but they were very disorganised and did not run to the schedule (left us waiting at the Hirafu welcome centre for an hour as they had decided to cancel the service) nisekoshuttlebus

Very strange vibe to the place. Reminds me of a deserted cold war era ski resort. Snow quality is significantly worse than nearby Niseko. Runs are basically flat, their only idea of a black run is moguls. Forget the place and go to Niseko and if you are trying to avoid the crowds go to Moiwa.

snow, slopes, food, lifts, weather, staff, slope grooming all one could ask for in a ski resort. second visit and will not be the last. ENJOY.

I was based in Niseko, and after hearing about the conditions in Rusutsu, thought I would visit it and see what the fuss was about.. This is easily the best riding I've ever had!Rusutsu is pretty much all lift-accessible side country and there was more snow and less wind than Niseko. I've now been 3 times and will keep going back. Highly recommended!!If you don't want to stay at the hotel there, you can stay in Niseko and catch a bus there and back - tickets can be organised from one of the bus counters in the Hirafu Welcome Centre. Be sure to book in advance as this quite often sells out

These ski slopes were wide and compacted properly in beginner and intermediate slopes, so it was very easy for me to ski. However, it was inconvenient to take much time from Mt. West to Mt. Isola which is the largest mountain. In addition, when I visited here, a Isola third quad was stopped due to poor maintenance, so I couldn't ski at the left side slopes in Mt. Isola. I was quite disappointed it. I strongly demand them to maintain the facilities accurately because I paid expensive charge.

My son & I were based in Niseko (Hirafu) with a Whiteroom Tours group. However, we got to ski a number of resorts (all 4 Niseko resorts), Moiwa, Kiroro and Rusutsu. And Rusutsu was by far the best. Uncrowded, Great powder, great runs and plenty of fresh lines through the trees. Had an absolute ball. Can't comment on the accomodation at the resort as we travelled from Niseko each morning (about a 45 min trip). Highly recommended.

If its the snow experience you're after, whether it be powder, tree skiing with hardly any queues, this is a hidden gem of a resort. The hotel is strange, with the staff speaking very little English, and Disney themed shops and rides along the corridors. The Japanese Onsen or Sauna and hot baths were a bonus at the end of a tough days skiing. A heated wave pool for the kids and Dog sledding and horse rides in the snow, a novel attraction to try out. Limited shops outside of the hotel, except for a 7/11 for basic food and alcohol. We did however really enjoy our 8 days here in Rusutsu ski resort.
