Grate history of Chitré and the local area. It is a shame that this local museum does not receive funding to help maintain the building and manage the museum.

They were trying but there were lots of things needing repair such as items that had become unglued and very dusty. You could tell that dampness had ruined some displays. We were glad to see a local school group going through for history lessons. Maybe if they charged two dollars the repairs could be made.

The museum stretches over 2 floors and you can see a lot of pottery and relics from the past of the of Herrera/Los Santos. Even though the descriptions are all spanish, the guide there speaks fluent English and is very competent and enthusiastic about explaining everything to you. Entry-fee is only one dollar, so it's well worth its money.

It is a museum situated in an old colonial building. It is a great little museum showing the history of the area. It has old pottery and jewellry from the area and also an original ancient burial ground, showing you what they used to get buried in and they used to dress them up properly before getting buried! Also on the second floor you can see the dragon masks which get made in the area, I have to say some of them are scary but definitely worth going to see because many of the locals wear these during festivals throughout the year, but some of them definitely send a shiver down your body. It is only a one dollar entry so I would recommend going just to get to know the history, however I would say that being able to read Spanish would be helpful because all the descriptions are in Spanish, so you may get lost in the ages if you can't.
