This was a 2nd trip for me to the Seychelles and thus a 2nd time to visit Vallee de Mai. Compared to 20 years ago, it is much the same, however,it now is very well marked and some paths very nicely graded. The big change, the expense to enter! It is now 300 rupees (if I remember correctly), or around $20-25 per ticket which is exorbitant for the right to walk around the preserve which can be done in an hour or two! But it is worth it.

Again here...it s unique this forest...with the coco de mer palm...you will see the female and male palm individually and wondering for real if it s not the garden of Eve...if you are lucky you may even see the black parrot...unique too.

When we arrived ( part of a tour group) in the early morning, the carpark was already quite crowded. We did a circular walk which is in pretty good condition, with a few modest ups and downs. The palms are unique and rare, although I have to admit I was a bit deflated to find that, apart from the rareness, shape and the mythology that grew around them, they are otherwise unremarkable. I did enjoy spotting the endangered black parrots several times - that was special! The rainforest itself is quite pleasant and I quite enjoyed the introduced tropical fruit trees (they are slowly removing those). Our entrance fees help ISF subsidise their work at Aldabra, so for that alone it was well worth it.

The Vallee de Mai is an unbelievable beautiful Nature Park. It is said that it is the 'Lost Garden of Eden', and I can understanding why. This was not my first visit to the Vallee de Mai, I have been there several times on different occasions and everytime it takes my breath away. Walking amongst the giant palms is absolutely awesome. Seeing the Suns rays through the gigantic Palm leaves is breathtaking. A real must when visiting Praslin Island!

Arrived at 8:30 opening, hiked for 1 1/2 hours and thoroughly enjoyed the immersion amidst giant leaves and sexy coconuts. Somewhat strenuous up and down irregular steps in some parts or some stony sections if you chose the longer routes. When we left, large groups were arriving and I would not enjoy the trails if they were crowded.

Well know reserve on Praslin. Over 35 years in existence and seen by many. Very dense vegetation mainly consist of palms. The admittance fee is a bit overwhelming for 1hr 30 mins of walking in a forest. You can see the famous Coco De Mer nut, but that can also be seen, touch, and even smell at the Fond Ferdinand Nature Reserve, for half the price.

The Coco de Mer rain forest is a world class treat. The travel times given for the walks are exaggerations, and the longer loop trail was not at all tiring. Beautiful. Not to be missed. Aside from the lovely beaches, this was the highlight of the trip for me.

Situated in the centre of Praline the nature reserve makes a welcome change from the beautiful beaches. It was nice to see the flora and fauna that typically makes up the vegetation of the Seychelles. It’s world famous for the Coco de Mer plant which bears the world’s largest seed in the shape of a female pelvis. By coincidence the male Coco Me Mer plant takes the shape of a males most precious asset! There is one path that more or less circles the nature reserve, whilst another cuts through the centre. Walking is fairly comfortable, but there are one or two steep climbs. Although there are guided walks available we decided to do our own thing at our own pace, and thoroughly ourselves. You need at least two hours to get the most from your visit. We took one of the local buses for just a few rupees, but you have to remember to shout loudly when you want the bus to stop, and prepare for sudden breaking!

We have now visited the Vallee de Mai twice in 15 years. Excellent choice of walking trails, we took the longest one. As we had been there before, we didn't hire a guide. Very expensive entry fee, there is a much cheaper and equally good alternative nearby in which the guide is included in the minimal entry fee.
