Massive statues that must have been amazing when part of the original temple complex, but all that has gone now. The statues are sat alone and look quite eerie and forlorn. It's a case of stop, take a photo and then drive off. A pity really but nothing else to say.

Since I decided to rent a bike (which is the best thing to do in Luxor) I cycled to the valley of the Kings and stopped by at the Colossi! I was left alone by the traders and I feel that was due to the bike, as they might had the impression that I'm a 'local' (=Yes, the statues suffered a lot, once due to an earthquake as well as to the weather, but if one takes the time and reads up before going there, it's amazing to imagine how these were the portal entrance to a massive temple!

This was a quick stop on our way to the Valley of the kings. There is no cost and you can look at the writings on the statues and take some beautiful pictures. Worth the 5 minutes, and if you have more time, walk around and live the history.

These statues live up to their name, they are colossal! But other than that, they seem a little out of place now, they stand rather desolately by the road side. Luckily, you don't have to make a special trip to see them, as you pass them on a tour to the Valley of the Kings. They are also quite battered after all these thousands of years, but with some imagination you can picture how they would have been. No entrance fee, as they are not enclosed in any way.

Had seen pictures before, but when you stand near these statues you realise just how big they really are. Stood in disbelief. You just could not appreciate how long it must have taken to build these statues. The fact they are still there, is amazing, a little battered obviously but all I can say is wow....

Worth a visit, just off the road - again just think of the history and go with your imagination - feels a little out of place but as always - quite absorbing.

Incredible. It was our the first stop on our trip to Luxor with a private travel agency steven@marsaalam.com. The first meeting with incredible history of Egypt. You don´t have to miss it!There we meet on the first time with lots of peddlers sell gifts, they weren´t so friendly, they wanted to sell something us, we aren´t interested in that. However due to them we have to leave that pleace earlier than we planned, we couldn´t stay there without somebody didn´t tell us & show us......I know they want to sell and to get money, but it wasn´t so good way how to take our attention.

This is an easy attraction to do as a "drive-by." They are really impressive, just colossal statues standing out in the open plain... They would have once flanked the gateways of pylons, but no more. Worth the photo op!

Somewhat crumbled and heavily restored, these colossi still are breathtaking. We arrived during Friday prayer (broadcast via loudspeakers). Perhaps that was the reason we had no trouble at all with over eager vendors. Definitely recommendable.

Making a tour on the West Bank than the Colossi of Memnon should be on your must see list. When the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Amenhotep III was destroyed, only two gigantic stone statues remained. The nearly 18-meter-high statues are carved out of quartzite boulders. The right image has been badly damaged by an earthquake. You can easily see them from the public road; there is no entrance fee. In the parking lot you will find a number of shops. One has a beautiful view over the open plain with in the background the valley of the kings. You won't miss the Colossi driving from New Gurna towards Deir al-Medina.

We have a private tour guide take us here in 2012. We were warned about the street sellers straight away. As we arrived we did get surrounded by street sellers but when you say no they pretty much get the idea and move onto the next tourist. Lovely sight, great for photos and trying to be adventurous with your photos. We stopped here either on the way to or on the way back from Hatchetsut temple. Not much else to do here about a 15min stop.

This is on the way to hatchatsut temple and worth the stop as they found another one and is at the back still been repaired,the whole area is under excavation and lots more to be unearthed so great to see this happening and is free too ,sellers are present but ok

Only had a few minutes here, would have loved to have spent longer. There is a lot of excavation still on going and when we were there they were reconstructing one of the fallen statues.

Luxor is filled with history and there is a lot to see but these two statues are well worth a visit.The scale of them is immense, hard to image the labour that went into them. It's awe inspiring to be able to see & touch a piece of ancient Egypt.
