For r35 you get to see four different houses from different periods. The guides were very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. Would recommend if you're into historical buildings and reconstruction of periods of history. Definitely worthwhile.

They estimate that the visit will take 35 minutes but you can spend longer. Each house had a guide in period costume recounting the history of the house. Overall very informative and worth doing especially if short on time.

A small but interesting museum showing how people lived in the passed . IT is really a must to see this wellorganized place in order to understand the history of Stellenbosch better .

This site has multiple houses to visit and you have to walk across the street to see some, but the insides of these homes were worth the strange setup.

Great place interesting and shows more of the local history. Can't think of much else. Nagged by TA!

The Village Museum offers a very good insight in the life and history of the first Europeans, the subsequent 'settlers' as well as the role and position of the 'local' people. Many objects are very recognisably 'european', but nearly all (re-)produced in S A with local materials. In each of the 5 (original) houses of the museum village a local guide is available for further explanations. we thouroughly enjoyed it.

-4 furnished homes on original foundations representing 4 architectural and social periods in Stellenbosch, from 1600's to late 1800's -- you walk from home to home, where friendly guides in period costumes describe life in that period-low-key and relaxing way to learn about the history of the city

I have always been curious to know more about the city than what its present look says. The stellenbosch village museum is rich in history and natrates stories of its founder, the life people lived in the back.It is located in a peaceful surrounding with white washed buildings and canopy of trees. There is a petty entry fee of 30 ZAR per head. Stellenbosch is a lovely spectacle not so far away from Capetown. I feel it compensates the commercialized/ touristy side of Capetown. It is much calmer and peaceful than capetown.

This museum is one of the best in the country. It consists of a walk through 4 different houses from different periods, from 17th c to 19th c, each furnished in the appropriate style (from humble to grand) and with a guide dressed in the costume of that time. Do not miss it!

I am writing this review mainly because I saw a prosperous family give the museum a shrug when they came into the main entrance and decided it wasn't worth even the modest fee. So much to read. . .nothing really to look at besides illustrations and old photos. BUT: what they didn't realise is that the museum is actually three houses from different periods, all filled with furnishings and objects of the period in question, and staffed by a guide who gives you an interesting, short welcome and then leaves you alone to explore the rooms. I don't know why the museum has such an off-putting general entrance, or why it isn't made immediately clear that the museum proper is not here at all, but next door in the 16th C. house, from which you move on to the 18th C. house nearby, and wind up in the 19th C. house, also nearby. It's a superb museum, much neglected, I suspect.

We passed a very enjoyable couple of hours wandering through the 4 houses, each from a different old period, which make up this museum. Staff dressed in clothes contemporaneous with the period of the house in which they were positioned, were very knowledgeable and added to our enjoyment.

Four separate houses make up the museum; each displays a period from the late 17th to late 19th Century. Each has a local 'guide' in period costume to tell you a little about it. This was a very interesting couple of hours in the town.
