This museum shattered our expectations. It is absolutely loaded with terrific pieces of artwork, spanning many years and styles. We were most surprised to find Matisse's Blue Nude housed here, given the complete lack of advertisement about it. This museum is free of charge, and is a must-see to Baltimore residents and visitors alike.

Thank you for sharing your love of the BMA on TripAdvisor! Allowing students like yourself the opportunity to visit as often as they wish is one of the many reasons why the museum offers free general admission for everyone, every day. The BMA also offers free audio tours and has a mobile-optimized website with lots of information about the artworks so you can visit virtually any time. As you noted, there is always something new to see. Our curators love to add new objects to the galleries or rearrange them so you can see the artworks in a new way. We look forward to your next visit!

This museum was an absolute jewel. Go. The artwork is amazing, and there are some real surprises here - thanks to the wealth that was once in Baltimore. There were many great benefactors of the arts many years ago. The city benefits from those generous donors still today. That is not to say that those with wealth no longer contribute in this city, it is simply to note what most people don't realize - that this was once a city of great wealth from banking, shipping, and industry of many kinds. Perhaps it will be again. Go. Visit this museum. If you can visit without small children - do. You will have time to truly enjoy some spectacular pieces of art. One surprise was the ancient mosaic flooring that is displayed on the walls here. Very few museums can host this kind of ancient art work. There is also a very nice sculpture garden outside. You will enjoy this museum.

This is one of the nation's great art museums (Cone Collection, Matisse, etc.) and is FREE. It has a good gift shop and a good-but-not-great restaurant, Gertrude's. There is pay parking on the street and in the nearby Johns Hopkins underground parking garage. Much of the museum is being renovated and will reopen in 2015, according to the floor plan we were handed. But the big news is that they have finished with reorganizing the American collection, and it is amazing. Aside from the high quality of the collection, this is an example of how editing from among many choices, mixing media and organizing well can stimulate but not overwhelm the visitor.

I am very sorry you had an unpleasant experience with one of the museum's security officers. While they take their job safeguarding the collection very seriously, they are also expected to treat visitors with courtesy and respect. Obviously, the person you encountered did not meet that expectation. We would like to know more about your experience so that we could identify the security officer and make sure she receives additional training. Any information, including the gallery and time of day, would be helpful. Please contact me directly at abrown@artbma.org. Thank you!

It's a fantastic museum with a wide variety of collection. What's more, it is free! I'm sure there is something for every one's taste.

This free museum has an excellent collection of art, including a significant amount of Matisse works. We spent about 2 hours here and did not see the whole museum, but since we live in the area, we will definitely be back. It backs up to Johns Hopkins University, which is a nice campus to walk around as well.

I was really surprised to find this tucked away where it was and couldn't have been happier with it. My family and I had a great time coming in unexpectedly

Not only was the sculpture and art outstanding, but the giftshop was excellent. An added feature, was a wonderful restaurant with outstanding food!

The BMA is a must-do on a trip to Baltimore. Its size allows you to enjoy lots of variety without feeling overwhelmed. Staff greet each visitor at the door with an offer of directions and suggestions. And it's free. As in NO ENTRANCE FEE EVER.And for that almost unheard-of price of admission, even if you see nothing but the Cone Collection, the trip is worth it. You needn't be a Matisse fan (though how can anyone not be?!) to appreciate how this collection is arrayed and curated. Getting to know the Cones, in addition to seeing the paintings, is like a mini-course in Impressionist collecting and history. Take time for the Virtual Tour of the Cone Sisters' Apartments, an amazing digitally-produced visit to their homes, with their collections on view just as they were arrayed in the Cones' lifetimes. Touch the screen and "walk" into and around each room, and make sure to look for Matisse himself standing by a sideboard. Besides all that, the BMA sits in the Homewood section of Baltimore, which many tourists don't see. Nearby are Johns Hopkins University, interesting residential blocks, some good cafes and restaurants, and a beautiful park. Worth a detour from the Inner Harbor, for sure.

We were not really aware of Gertrude's after a nice visit to the newly-renovated and fabulous BMA. The cafe is comfortable, quiet and just the place for a light lunch. Nice menu choices including cream of crab and Md-style crab soup and sandwiches.

Finally got myself to the museum and the Cone Collection. Impressive, to say the least. It was also lovely to be in a museum that's not crowded (I live in NYC) although we were there the Saturday before Christmas so maybe that's just a quiet day. Museum facilities are excellent, and we really enjoyed the restaurant. Good food, music and fun contest - staff members had decorated row house models. Didn't have the time or energy to see much of the rest of the collection, but it looked interesting.

If you are normally overwhelmed by art museums, then the BMA if perfect for you.Well laid out and not too large, could easily be seen in 2-3 hours. Free admission. Friendly staff. They are known for the Matisse collection, but I am not a fan so I skipped those rooms. The furniture/decorative pieces of 17th-19th century America was fun to see. Cool building.
