Rent a jeep and see if you can find your way through the maze of narrow dirt roads to reach the destination...........lots of fun and a great view.

Folger hill near by is higher 124 ft. When I was a kid this is what most of the island looked like. Good view of the harbor on a clear day. Bring your binoculars.

We rented a jeep and heard about Altar Rock. Not knowing what to expect, we kept driving and finally ended up at the highest point of the island. There is nothing to do here except yell at the top of your lungs b/c no one will here you...lol. Views were of nothing really, yet beautiful to be in a place so far out in the middle of no where. I would not recommed doing this in a car, definately need some sort of sports utility truck.

Great views, easy hiking, and one of the best ways to see the coastal heathland habitat on Nantucket. There are low-growing shrubs like huckleberry and low-bush blueberry, sedge, moss as well as goldenrods, asters, and other wild flowers. It's one of the highest elevations on the island and you can Polpis Harbor, Great Point and Sankaty Light.

Altar Rock is one of my favorite places to go mountain biking on island. Lots of rolling hills and beautiful scenery, watch out for sand patches!

Despite the flies that follow you up to the top, the view is beautiful. I could see the whole island. There are bike trails I didn't go on, but seemed pleasant. I stood on a rock and I was the highest thing on the island! My family and I took amazing pictures up there! You might have trouble getting there but it is worth the visit!!!

Even with maps, this place was hard to find. The road were gravel and bumpy and there were no direction signs. May of the dirt roads had "Y" intersections and you had to guess which way to go. The area is all shrubs. Shrubs and shrubs and more shrubs. (See Photo)It was not worth our time or drive to get here!
