Edith Wharton was a major American author in the tradition of Henry James, but she was also a pioneer in promoting interior design. Her home, The Mount exhibits her very influential ideas. The grounds are as impressive as the house. A good place to enjoy your outdoor lunch. And the bookstore is a superior example of what literary sites should offer. Very close to the Bryant Homestead in Cummington, which is also worth a visit.

This estate is only open part of the year in Lenox and worth a visit if you are in the area. The gardens are open year round, but the house April-Oct. It is a good hike or bike ride from Canyon Ranch and other hotels but there are no sidewalks--so care must be taken. The is a cafe when the house is open. Another great reason to visit the Berkshires, a must for any American Lit fan.

The Mount has been thoroughly reviewed already, so I'll just mention a couple of points. We spent more time there than we expected to, because we enjoyed it so much. The tour was excellent, although the group we went with was large; the tour guide made sure that everyone was in a good position and could see and hear her in every room. An added benefit is that, since the original furnishings are no longer in the house, a visitor can wander around on a self-guided tour as well, and is even allowed to sit on most of the chairs.Walk down to see the formal garden if you can. It's a bit of a walk, with a lot of steps to descend, but I think you'll find it well worth it.

It was a privilege to experience nature as cultivated to please the senses. The harmony of the gardens and the home was joyful.

The home & grounds are most beautiful. You can really imagine Edith entertaining her crowd there. Also great jazz & literary lectures.

It had many different sculptures through the wooded path to the Estate. We went at a time when not much was in bloom and the estate is being worked on but overall a wonderful estate to visit with a lot of information/history to learn.

Fantastic music in lovely, historic setting. If you can sit still while this group is performing, you must be either deaf or waiting for an ambulance to take you for medical assistance. Cool music with a hot beat. Jazz, blues, gospel, standards--they do it all to perfection.

I had the opportunity to visit The Mount when I visited Canyon Ranch. I didn't know what to expect, maybe just a standard tour of an old mansion. Boy, was I wrong! The grounds were absolutely beautiful. I wish I had brought a picnic lunch so I could eat in the lush forested areas. The gardens were beautiful. I loved strolling around the property. The house tour was very interesting as well.Except for reading a couple of her books, I didn't know much about Edith Wharton. This visit helped me understand her and made me want to read more of her works.

A trip to "The Mount" was recommended by a family member. It was one of the few "paid attractions" that we did. It was lovely and well worth it. The day was lovely to walk slowly and enjoy the sculptures. The docent was knowledgeable and fun to listen to. Well worth the trip.

The gardens are spectacular, and the house is a marvel of restoration. The docents and guides were excellent.

Edith Wharton was ahead of her time and clearly gifted in many ways. We took the 1:00 house tour with our guide, Cecily, who was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We also took the 2:00 Garden tour. Everything was well explained and very interesting. In total, we spent 3 hours there...it was a beautiful day, so walking the grounds was lovely. There is a small café if you want to have a drink and snack. They also do weddings and we saw a photo album of two weddings. They were beautiful.. what a great venue.

Brilliantly preserved memorial of its owner, set in a beautifully manicured parklike garden. I was there for a private occasion - a wedding - and the venue certainly added its own flavor of magic to the day!
