I cannot speak of hours or admission or directions as I was on a group tour. All I can say is GO! I knew little about Cash and the museum (in the old Dyess Colony HQ) has a wonderful and moving explanation of the humble hardworking farm family who liuved in this WPA farm communit project, and of young Johnny's rise to stardom. The home itself is a mindblower - you can feel the Grapes of Wrath and yet, it has a beauty in its simplicity and very accurate restored quality. GO! Well worth it, and by the way, "Dyess" is pronounced closer to "Dice" and is definitely not "Die - ess"!!

I have been waiting for this to open since I first heard about it a couple of years ago. This site is important for two reasons, not only because it is Johnny Cash's boyhood home but it is a glimpse of life for some during the depression due to Roosevelt programs. My husband says I was born too late - should have grown up during the depression. Beautifully furnished - it was a trip back to the 30's. Wayne, the mayor of Dyess, gave us our tour and did a great job. Any questions you have about the area, he can answer. It has a lot of potential which they are working on. Can't wait to go back when other things are added. But it is definitely worth a trip now.

I have never been a big country music fan, but always enjoyed Johnny Cash. His distinct sound was hypnotic. I was familiar with his history, and as soon as I heard they had opened up his newly restored childhood home, I started making plans to visit. I contacted a friend in Missouri(I am from Sherwood, AR), and invited her and her husband to meet us there. She agreed and contacted her daughter and her husband in Memphis, and they drove over and met us there also. You have to get tickets to get a tour of the house from another historic building in "downtown" Dyess. It's about a mile from the house, which sits all alone in a large empty plot of land. Our tour guide turned out to be the mayor, and he did a great job of filling us in on the history of not only the Cash family, and the pains that were taken to restore the house to virtually the identical look it had when they lived there, but also the history of the Dyess Colony. It was well worth our trip, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it! I hope to bring more friends back in the future.

We drove from Memphis to the tiny town of Dyess in Arkansas. The tour started with the lovely lady in the town hall building next to the old theatre memorial. It was brand new and self guided through four rooms of JR info. We finished that part and were greeted by JR Cash's life long friend. After a quick yarn to him we drove to the restored Cash house. We were met there by our tour guide Jessica, who delivered a very informative tour of the well presented, fully restored house. This was a little gem to cap off the other music stories of the Nashville Memphis trail. Hint: Don't go direct to house as you need to get tickets at town hall building.

I Have been taking groups to the Cash house since 2008. I visited when the previous owner lived there and watched it become what it is today. For any Johnny Cash fan it's a 'must visit' it had been restored to what it was like when the Cash family lived, right down to the furniture, fittings and floor covering. I'm looking forward to visiting again with my 'Old Time Country' tour group next month.

If you're a Cash fan and you're anywhere near this part of the country you need to pay a visit to this little house in what seems like the middle of nowhere. It's informative and gives you a real sense of where he made his beginning and what influenced him. What I don't recommend is getting there on a big Harley touring bike like I did! Those roads just aren't made for them!

Been awhile since I've been there but a great place to see. Make sure you stop by the little store on HWY 14 between the house and Dyess. Don't let the outside scare you off, the old man inside is full of stories about the area. Also go over to Dyess, its a nice little town with restored buildings and a theater.

I suppose the only thing that's changed since JR lived there is the new paint job and fence around it to keep idiots out.I was unable to obtain entrance, but HAD to go by on his birthday. It's just a little White House out in the middle of a cotton field way down a muddle ole road. What more could you expect? They're working on more... I'll be sure to check it out after they improve it a bit.
