Go up to the second floor and take time to view each painting in the gallery. The paintings are amazing and show the history of Alabama as a state. Wonderful!

The building houses a treasure trove of murals depicting the history of Alabama, aspects from social, economic and political. Yes, you'll have to wade through the barrage of federal level security to get in (think airport) and cameras are not allowed, but you'll be rewarded with an oft-forgotten local gem of an attraction, and it's FREE.

The Federal Building and Courthouse was built to reflect the grandeur of the United States Government. It is more than a bit of overkill as it dominates the heart of downtown Tuscaloosa. Architecturally it is huge and reflects something akin to a Roman building. Inside the is amazing artwork and quite a story about the West Alabama and the workings of the Federal Government and how it interacts with its citizens. It is worth a visit.
