Gruglas
This course SE of Clarksburg, WV was designed by the golf architect icon Robert Trent Jones in 1964, opening in 1965. It is a traditional layout, which I ADORE!! This course is being worked on feverishly to restore its original stature. The extremely friendly guys in the pro shop explained that the club had fallen into disrepair and that the current owners are working hard to restore it. The tee boxes are probably the worst items. But I am not fussy about tee boxes provided that they are level and not overgrown. Their problem is lack of grass on these items. But the greens were good. And the layout is very good, which is priority one in my book. No course with a lousy layout will ever be good unless/until it is changed. The rough was decent, and the fairways were spotty .... take preferred lies. If the winter of 2014-15 behaves itself (no major ice issues), this course could be very good for its 50th "birthday" in 2015. They even hired a greenskeeper from the Pete Dye course in Bridgeport, WV, so they are committed to upgrading it.
