I have made a circle tour of outdoors Montana for flatlanders to take over a week. This connects part of the tour, and can potentially take you through the "wet side" west of the Rockies, starting a Highway 2 north from Whitefish or Columbia Falls, and driving south for hours of great views, west of Flathead Lake on Highway 93, through Missoula and down to Lost Trail Pass. I realize that I am including more than the valley here, but I am being a good tour guide, not a geographer. You will appreciate this if you want to see things in an orderly fashion. If you have time, take both the east and west forks at Lost Trail, go to Idaho on Highway 93, and then go to Wisdom on Highway 43. Winter and spring driving can be tricky or impossible on Hwy 43. it is my favorite road in early spring, with snow piled up on both sides, it feels like I am riding a luge instead of a car. Happy trails, traveler!

This is a beautiful place to live and work. We had a short summer this year, due to the forest fire smoke though. Finally, we are having a beautiful fall.

There is so much natural beauty abundant here plus the people are generally friendly. We're only 40 miles from 'city' in case one needs some 'civilizing' and 'culture.' It's a luxury to get to spend time here.

Scenery and fishing are tops. The Bitterroot river and its East and West forks are loaded with fish and lots of animals to enjoy. Bring your camera and fishing rod!

I always thought Montana had lots of snow, cold, ice, etc. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised on my recent visit! Beautiful snow-capped mountains surround this valley, but beautiful weather in the valley, in the 55-68 degree range, just needing a vest over a shirt. We did have some drizzles, but that is to be expected anywhere during springtime. The fishermen were out, but it wasn't like "combat fishing" in Alaska. There's a nice wide paved bike path that runs along hiway 93 that was very popular with cyclists. Horseback riding was the best for me and a nice pace to take in the breathtaking views. Relaxing around the fireplace, hiking, and horseback riding made this a terrific getaway. I will definitely be back for the summer to escape the AZ heat.

Celebrating life in natural settings was joyous! Our guide was really friendly and informed about the history of the area and that added a really interesting dimension to our visit.

We stayed at Lost Trail Hot Springs and rode our motorcycles east about 20 miles to the Big Hole Battlefield where Chief Joseph of the Nez Pierce and his tribe fought off the US army in 1877 before trying to escape to Yellowstone Park and then Canada to avoid being penned in on the reservation. It is a National Park, and the story is a sad one every American should know.

Wow...what a secret, what a find. If you like western history, a feel of the cowboy era, great people and lots of great local microbrew....and fishing, scenery and rugged outdoor adventure, then the Bitteroot has it all, and without the crowds of Glacier and Yellowstone NPs. Sure, Bitterroot Valley is not Yellowstone or Glacier, but with a little effort (i.e., leaving your car ), you can get to places that will make you think you are in one of those more infamous places. Keep an eye open for wolves, bear, coyote, moutain lions and trophy deer. Downers - ticks in the warm wet spring - but in the outback, not the valley, and scarce quality dining. Lots of great vacation rentals with incredible views.

The scenery in the Bitterroot Valley is very beautiful. It starts as a very wide open valley up near Missoula and as you progress towards the south the valley gets narrower and the mountains start climb straight up off the valley floor. I would recommend a trip through the valley in the spring when there is still snow caps on the mountains or in the fall when trees start to turn colors.

Paesaggi spettacolari!!!! Lungo la strada ci siamo ripetutamente fermati a fare fotografie. Assolutamente da vedere!
