beaverhead county museum

Museums don't appeal to me, but 11 degrees outside and my husband wanted to take a look, so we visited this museum. I'm glad we did. The museum is a collection of historic buildings (reproductions?) along a boardwalk, so first you've got to get to the very end and start inside before walking back to see the school house and train depot. Right when you walk into the museum you see a Kodiac bear brought back from Alaska by a local hunter. Wow! Alongside the fireplace are 2 more trophies and the room is filled with artifacts. My favorite part was inside the train depot, which you can only access with a code given to you after paying the admittance fee at the museum building. We paid $6 for 2 adults. The displays of birds behind glass was fantastic! So many great specimens to look at; It was like going to the zoo, but seeing all the animals at once! I really liked it and plan to take our toddler in the future.

Nice museum but the hostess was the best part. She relayed her experience in Beaverhead Valley-not found in any books or displays. Really enjoyed the visit.

We are bicycling cross country through small town USA. We enjoy learning about the history of the areas we pass through. This local museum has a great collection of local artifacts and historical buildings. What makes this museum particularly interesting was the museum staff. Lynn, in particular, was just a fountain of knowledge regarding this area, probably because she has lived in this area over 50 years. Stop in. This museum is worth an hour or two of your time.

The museum had a lot of history and was fun to visit! The staff was great and very helpful finding us the maps we wanted to buy!

This museum covers the history of Beaverhead County. The main building has a few different rooms with many antiques covering various subjects. There is also a sheepherder'd wagon on site. The one-room schoolhouse was cool to see, as was the pioneer cabin. The old train depot is on site as well. This hold the "Birds of Montana" section. There is also a diorama of Lewis & Clark here. This museum is worth a visit.

We wandered into this place 10minutes before it was due to close, the staff told us they were closing shortly but we said we didn't mind paying just for a quick look around. When they realised we were from England and were only in Dillon for 1 night passing through, they actually stayed open for a bit longer than usual for us .... that was lovely, and was much appreciated.The museum itself is well worth the entrance fee. We did hurry around, but even so it was worth it. Very interesting, and a must see if you are in Dillon

You can see it all in 45 minutes. They have some interesting items and a good history of the County and City. Staff was very friendly. Heck for $2 senior fee, how can you go wrong.

By any standards, this museum is fabulous. It's full of local history exceptionally well-displayed. The staff are very friendly, knowledgeable, and encourage visitors to ask lots of questions. Many displays are 'touchable' and very accessible (the school house). We especially enjoyed how the displays were organized around the founding families of the area and honoured the present families of Dillon. One friendly criticism: While there were a few of displays of First Nations artifacts, I would like to have seen more on the stories of the first peoples who have history in Beaverhead County.

Full of charm. Great place to visit and get good local history. Would recommend it even if you drive down from Butte.

The history laid out in the this small multi-building museum was just enough. The old buildings that house the museum were cool and one can tell that those who work their are proud of their heritage. My only negative comment would be about the bird taxidermy in the old train station. The space is so cool, and the panorama is really neat, but the rest of the space seems to be wasted on so much bird taxidermy...in talking to the curator, it sounds like they have a lot of history left to tell, so it is confusing as to why they would waste such valuable territory on so much taxidermy. However, in general the museum is a nice one.

we enjoyed seeing friends and neighbors and also learning so many facts and parts of history. some of the peope were young, but remembered the pony express
