This memorial was certainly off the beaten path, but that isolation only made it all the more powerful. Even though I know little about the miners who lost their lives in that fateful explosion, the effort that was put into crafting the sculptures really brought out the courage these men had. I could see it on the strong lines of their faces; I could feel it resonating from within the many hard hats that lined the wall. This memorial is a testament to men who gave their lives providing for their families. The ultimate sacrifice for the greater good.

This site was not easy to find as it was set a ways off the central business district of Hyden. When we did find it, it was worth it and we immediately understood why it was located where it was. It is off Hurricane Creek Road, in space that feels very private. The artwork that was put into the sculptures is amazing. The different placards are very useful in putting a context to both the event and the people who lost their lives in that tragic event. If you are interested in history or seeing the sacrifices that people make this is a must see.

Quite a ways off of the beaten path up Hurricane Road in front of the old Hurricane mine is the memorial to the miners who lost their lives in the Hurricane Creek Mine explosion. When we pulled into the parking lot, we saw the arbor where a metal mine helmet rested with the last name of each of the men who died. There is also a statue with real coal pieces on top. It was very humbling for us to be there and I received a whole new appreciation for miners today. This is a must see!

I felt very sad when I was here. Many of those who were gone were in the same family. Visiting this place reminded me of the movie October Sky.

It's a memorial for 38 lives lost during mining explosion. I love the architecture and layout of this memorial. This is quite far from the city but I am really glad that I visited the memorial!

This place is a good ways from town. However it is worth the trip. It is a memorial to miners who have died mining. It is important because it gave me insight to the hardships of coal mining. As a person from a town the does not have coal mines. It was interesting to see how the coal industry has impacted the region,
