On a recent Saturday afternoon we had a wonderful experience at the Portland Museum of Art, located right in the heart of downtown Portland, Maine. It is a relatively new building with four floors of spacious galleries. We were attracted to a special exhibit; the Coast and the Sea: Marine and Maritime Art in America. The gallery was extensive and made even more enjoyable by detailed signage providing information on both the artist and the painting itself. There is a well-stocked gift shop including souvenir items as well as reference works for serious enthusiasts. There are also activities and programs for children. The Portland Museum of Art is something Portland can be proud of. I’m sure we will visit it again on future trips to Maine.

Portland Museum of Art has a great variety of art in it's permanent collection and takes great effort in bringing in exhibits from other sources. The entrance price is reasonable. They also provide low-to-no cost entry available to help the community enjoy this treasured collection.

Its got a bit of everything - paintings to photographs, sculpture to glass, old to new. The various exhibits are very interesting - depending on your taste. Really is a must see whether from Maine or away. You can spend quite a bit of time in the museum depending on your stamina. I always enjoy going.

What a nice museum to stop at and look around...It has a little bit of everything, several real gems, and architecturally it's interesting...It's in a nice neighborhood of Portland, too...

The PMA is always a pleasure to visit. For a city the size of Portland, it is equal to or surpasses most museums found in much larger municipalities. Clean, friendly and well designed viewing areas make for comfortable viewing experience.

It is amazing that we have such a great collection of art in Maine! This museum does a great job displaying it, the layout is easy to navigate and the staff are very knowledgeable about the art.

I wish I could remember the artists name. there was an additional fee for an artist who had his own gallery on the first floor. his artwork was phenomenal. well worth the additional fee. the cost of the museum was reasonable. a lot of artwork. I enjoyed the architecture of the building itself. finding the stairs/elevator to next floor of each floor was a bit of a maze. I thought the local artist was not worth showing, however, there was a lot of talented artists work portrayed. I enjoyed the sculptures and displayed historical items in particular, past the small gift shop. I didn't eat at the café, however, it did look nice.

Went to PMA with the family. The museum has a nice combination of art by local artists depicting the local region, as well as art by masters such as Renoir, Picasso, Sargent and Monet. There were many sculptures as well as paintings. You can get in for free Friday evenings!

We had a delightful afternoon at this Museum and the exhibits are great and well displayed. It's in the heart of Portland, parking in a garage around the corner was easy and very reasonable, and the Museum cafe serves wonderful soup, sandwiches, etc. The cafe also serves as the exhibit for a really good glass and china exhibit. Lots of paintings, Winslow Homers, and colonial furniture, as well as terrific sculpture and a modern art floor. Don't mss it if in the area.

My wife and I toured New England in October to see the fall colors, and passed through Portland, Maine and had the chance to visit the Portland Museum of Art. With focus on the works of New England artists in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, this museum has an impressive collection which includes works by Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Robert Henri, and Andrew Wyeth. The PMA is Maine's oldest art institution (dating back to 1882), but the current beautiful brick building was built in 1983 and is itself an impressive structure, housing the paintings and sculpture in an easily and comfortably viewed layout.
