There's really not much to do in Lewiston. I know, I lived there half of my life and growing up I used to visit this place quite often. There is much to see, they have a section devoted to the Marsden Hartley Cultural Center. The library really is one of the only places to enjoy when visiting the town, along with Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary.

Please don't get me wrong: the low rating I give the Hartley Center doesn't mean that I don't think it's terrific for what it is -- a library. Lisbon Street needs all the love we can give it and I loudly applaud Lewiston for this elegant rehab. But this rating is to alert tourists and other visitors that this is *not* a place to connect with Marsden Hartley, Lewiston's great native son. There's one Hartley painting here, and it is a very early picture in which little of his later qualities can be seen. Bear in mind that Hartley left Lewiston early in life and much later settled in a coastal area. He loved Lewiston very much from a distance, and sadly, very little in the city recalls his presence here. He is honored here, but in absentia.

We found this library to be exceptional. The staff is very knowledgeable and accommodating. Although we were only visiting, kids got to a session of "read to a dog". We went back the next day, and were given chocolate dog bones as a "belated" treat. We love the diverse staff and books. All in all, if you are wondering what to do on a free afternoon in Lewiston, head to this library! You won't regret it!
